[newbie] Swap DVD and CD-RW drives

2003-01-15 Thread Mungal Dhanda
Mandrake-Linux experts,

I have Mandrake 8.2 on a PC with one DVD Rom drive and one CD-RW.
Currently, DVD Rom drive is the master (hdc) and CD-RW is slave (hdd).
I want to swap the two CD drives around so that CD-RW is the master and
DVD Rom drive is the slave.

Could someone explain what needs to be done within mandrake-linux for
the DVD and CD-RW to be recognised correctly.

Many thanks.

Mungal.

Can someone help with this?

[newbie] Adding new user account

2000-06-17 Thread mungal . dhanda

I want to add a new user account to the Linux system.

I used the command 'adduser', gave the necessary parameters such as:
User name
Password
Home directory
Shell to use.

The account is created because:
Home directory exists with the skeleton of files.
Entry exists in /etc/passwd
Entry exits in /etc/groups

etc.

I can do 'su ' and it works.
i can do 'cd ~ and it works.

The account was created as root.

But when I try to log in from KDE, the system accepts the user name and
password and attempts to start-up the desktop, but fails and returns back
to the log in screen.

I have also tried to create the account using the graphical front end
from Gnome. This gives the same result/problem.

Could someone help.

Regards.

[newbie] SCSI card for CD

2000-05-04 Thread mungal . dhanda

I'm considering a SCSI CD R/W.

Any recommendations on the SCSI controller suitable for use with a CD R/W
under Linux.

Would Adaptec 2904 be OK? It is a PCI SCSI controller?

Thanks.

[newbie] CD Re-writer for Linux

Re: [newbie] running windows in linux

2000-04-18 Thread mungal . dhanda

Exceed is quite a mature product.

It turns the windows based PC into X Terminal.

The window manager you use depends on your X server.

I have used Exceed on a PC (Pentium 133) and the X server was on Sun.

Hence, Exceed does not require a high spec PC.

[newbie] Help with Mandrake install ....

2000-04-13 Thread mungal . dhanda

I'm newcomer to Linux/PC.

I tried to install Mandrake Linux V7.0 on my PC. I used the latest
cdrom.img file from the web as the one on the CD-ROM is thought to be
faulty.

I used the recommended settings.

Although linux is installed correctly, I can't boot in Windows.

Can anyone help.

Regards.
