[newbie] kdeinit - configuring?

2003-11-25 Thread Phil Newcombe
Hi

Does anybody know where I go in 9.2 to turn off a kdeinit service? Mine
starts a 'laptopdaemon' and I don't have a laptop. I believe it is
responsible for making my screen go blank every 60 seconds or so and
requiring me to use my password to get back in again. _very_
irritating. :-(

Thanks

It looks like those files won't be created if the script can't run but
line 92 looks just wrong so maybe one of our mail clients is truncating
lines or messing up the file somehow. I'm posting all this from windoze
(long story) and windoze and linux use a different default line ending
in text files (crlf opposed to just cr) so maybe if you're looking at
it in Mandrake the lines might be getting juggled because of that. Try
looking at the original post :

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/1997/debian-user-199711/msg01752.html

and see if anything looks obviously out of sync. (the backslashes at
the end of some lines are escape characters that tell the shell that
this is actually one long line but has been broken up for readability or
to fit on the screen or page better.)

I've just posted the scripts here :
http://www3.telus.net/bikim/chkmirror/

_01 is mine, _orig is the original, and _v2 is the authors next version.

the same thing about HP snapping up that loser Compaq.

In many ways it does make sense. IBM, after being snake bit by M$, isn't
putting it's eggs in one basket. Hence the bankrolling of RedHat and the
kinda backdoor financing of Novell's pick on SuSE. HP would, then, seem
logical.

If such a thing comes to pass there would be reason for M$ to be worried. Two
of it's main FUD attacks will be gone. One that there is no support from a
major vendor and the second that open source is designed to drive profit
driven companies out of business.

The other thing is the sense of inevitability as Linux moves into the server
and corporate mainstream. SuSE and Mandrake both lack the resources that Red
Hat has to compete in that space. That doesn' t mean that they aren't good
competitors it's just that Red Hat has a pocket full of thousand dollar bills
while they're sitting there with 20s.

Something good will come of all this if these big companies don't forget the
strength of Linux is in communities and the developers. If not, well, we'll
have to wait and see.

Hi all.

Here's a bash script I found looking for something

that would poll

(ping) Mandrake mirrors and return the result rated

by speed like

apt-netselect does in Debian. I hacked it up a bit

to make it

work with
the mirror list (README_mirrors) and I'm no guru

so.

I probably should've tested it before my orginal post
to this thread. Oh well. I've run into a problem.
This is what I get when I run the script:

tmp]$ sh cheker README.mirrors
Testing tr: invalid option -- n
Try `tr --help' for more information.
cheker: line 69: syntax error near unexpected token
`newline'
cheker: line 69: `then grep rtt
$tmpdir/ping$$_$h | cut -d/ -f 5 | tr \n'
This is rather confusing since tr has the valid option
of \n. Here's a copy of the script below,
TIA,

Tango

Thanks for trying it out. It worked fine for me on my 9.2 box - some
minor erroneous ping results but otherwise very helpful. I'm sorry,
like I said, I'm no guru. I had to change a couple of the grep lines
because, I think, they referred to ping message lines from a different
ping than mine. Try pinging something and look at the messages it
returns. It should say something like 'round trip time'. I think that
is what 'rtt' refers to here. Then you have to change the grep
expression to match. If your grep doesn't have a match for 'rtt' it'll
probably just die because it seems as each command must complete without
error or the following commands make no sense. Upon closer inspection I
think I posted the original version and not the one I used. I'll boot
up Mandrake to see and get back to you.

If you want gaim to work with msn, then Texstar has gaim-0.71 for Mandrake

Texstar is urpmi enabled. For Charles' package just click on it using

And how long will it be before all these car owners will have to pay a
yearly license fee to M$? or What happens if you swap engines?

I don't get these business egg-heads - the _proven_ most reliable
operating system on the planet is *Free* and they choose to go with the
_proven_ most bug-ridden software available and pay through the nose for
it!!! Brother...

[newbie] Installing 'un-official' mdk rpm's

2003-11-11 Thread Phil Newcombe
Hi all

Thanks for the help on rpmdrake. Now I have another question. What's
the best way of installing an un-official mandrake rpm. I am trying to
get gaim to work with msn now that they have apparently tinkered with
the protocol. The gaim website says it should work with a version
7.1. They have a dl link that has a 7.2 mdk rpm at the top of the
list so I grabbed that but now it won't install because of dep
problems. Can I use urpmi, rpm, rpmdrake or anything else to install
this? Either command line or gui?

Agreed I like Mandrake!

Hey, maybe it's the marketing guy who's running it. It seems like
something only a 'marketing guy' would come up with.

Re: [newbie] waiting for Mandrake 9.2 ISOs....

Any idea as to how long we will have to wait for the ISO's?

Is there another way to download and fully install 9.2 without the
ISO's, like a Net_install?
-Thanks,

-=Thinker

I just installed 9.2 from an ftp mirror after dl'ing the network install
floppy image and 'rawrite'ing it (rawritewin doesn't seem to work, at
least on W98). Slick as a rotten banana - worked like a charm. (I
looked up the uri for the mirror on the mandrake 9.2 dl page before I
started.)

[newbie] rpmdrake

2003-11-08 Thread Phil Newcombe
Hi all,

Why don't I see all packages with rpmdrake? I think it's setup properly
with ftp mirrors for main, contrib , etc but when I look for a package
that I Know is on one of the mirrors (Python) it doesn't show up
anywhere in rpmdrake.

Thanks
