[newbie] Printing Advice
Hi all. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it's possible (and how), I could set up to do my printing in "book" form. You know, two sides of the page? I'm wasting a lot of paper here! I can't find any such option anywhere, even man lpr. I'm using a HP Deskjet 692-C, Mandrake 6.1. TIA
[newbie] Sympatico HSE
Hi all! I'm looking for a fellow Canadian who's also using Sympatico's HSE (that's my ISP for the rest of you), who can give me a hand with the new Access Manager software. I just burned and installed the new 61-1.iso image, and I see Sympatico's posted a R.H. 5.2 version; full source; and librarys 1,2 and 3. I have no idea what to get or how to configure it (naturally there's no support, they've only made these available as a "courtesy" grrr). Any help would be greatly appreciated before I lose my connection! TIA
Re: [newbie] RE:
Hi Ken. I'm not familiar with the free version of P.M., I've got 4.0; but a few questions. First, when you created the free space, did you create an extended partition to cover it? Did you create your Linux partitions as logical partitions inside it? Try that, and make sure you designate the correct filesystem for each logical partition you create, linux swap or ext2. And when you install using Disk Druid, don't re-create the partitions, just edit and set the mount points. Good luck! - Original Message - From: Ken Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, September 07, 1999 10:48 AM Subject: [newbie] RE: One thing I can see right off the bat. Re: [newbie] Multiple CPU (2 Celerons or one Pent-3)
Hi Aaron. Win98 won't run dual processors, only Linux, BeOS and NT. You might like to check out a machine Leo Laporte is building on The Screen Savers (www.zdtv.com ). It's got a Abit board with dual 366 Celerons overclocked to 550 each (1.1 GHz!), that's available in the U.S. - Original Message - From: Aaron deRozario [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Mandrake Linux' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 06, 1999 12:16 AM Subject: [newbie] Multiple CPU (2 Celerons or one Pent-3) As a newbie there are a lot of things about Linux and computers in general that I do not yet understand - please bear with me. I have a query about the pros and cons of running multiple processors. I don't know about anywhere else in the world but in Australia the new Abit dual-Celeron boards have hit the shelves. The price for one of these boards packing 2 Celeron-400 processors is considerable less than that for a Pentium 3 - 550 with board. Now I understand that not all programmes work with multiple-processors, however I understand that in a multiple-processor setup one program may be run on processor A, while another is being dealt with by processor B. No doubt this is a major over-simplification. I therefore have a myriad of questions. 1) What standard Linux programmes take advantage of multiple-processors (ie GIMP, X-Windows, KDE) 2) Do productivity suites benefit from multiple processors? If I am running Applix and have several seriously big spreadsheets, a couple of word-processing documents, etc will there be an increase in performance over a single processor - or will performance be negligible? 3) Do programmes such as Blender take advbantage of multiple CPU's (not that I've used it yet but I would like to play with it a bit) 4) Would a dual-Celeron setup give me an overall better performance than the more expensive Pent-III? How noticeable would it be, and to what use is a multiple CPU system best put? I am starting to use a hard-disk recording system called Slab. This program allows the various processses of recording, mixing, FX processing and GUI to be distributed over several CPU's, yielding a performance increase. The author (Nick Copeland) said that this setup has not been tested on a multiple CPU system - so don't get one just to run Slab. As I am potentially in the market for a new system if I can get better performance from dual-Celerons on other programmes I run, I may as well save the money and impress my friends running Win98 with a system that really rocks. On a side note the new Abit board comes with DMA-66 controllers. IF I purchased a DMA-66 enabled hard drive and a DMA-66 m/board will Linux run okay? I think DMA-66 is not scheduled until 2.4. Could I set the board for DMA-33 until 2.4 is released?
Re: [newbie] Mandrake installation fails on mount
Hi Andy. I have used P.M. 4.0 to create a number of different partitioning schemes without any problems (you don't say which version of PM you have, maybe that has something to do with it). Mandrake recommends a simple / and /home plan, but I like a /usr/src partition as well for compiling different kernels, the size of which depending on how many you may wish to create and save. - Original Message - From: Andy Goth [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, September 04, 1999 2:49 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Mandrake installation fails on mount New development: I attempted to use PartitionMagic to make the Linux partitions after the installer failed. I didn't get very far... PartitionMagic reports a partition table error #120. Would someone with a PartitionMagic manual tell me what that means adn how to correct it? Another new development: My last avenue, fdisk, WORKED! It turned out that partition 5 was empty. That was confusing both mount and PartitionMagic. I deleted it (along with all the other Linux partitions), and I hope to install properly now. [newbie] RealPlayer G2
Hi all! I've just downloaded and installed the G2 for Linux, and configured the Netscape preferences to treat it as a helper application. But when I click on a link for it, it opens and I get the following audio clip from the Real Broadcasting Network: Sorry, but we cannot find the stream you requested on any of our servers, please check the URL and try again. Does anyone know what's going on and what I need to do to fix it? TIA
Re: [newbie] Network Card Support
Hi Kyle! Download Mandrake? I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but that card definetley is supported as an NE 2000 compatible in Mandrake 6.0. During setup for a LAN, it should be auto-detected as such. Just choose the dynamic host protocol and you're all set. You'll need to configure the Proxy Server settings in Netscape, etc. to connect. - Original Message - From: Kyle "Orange" Spahn [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 1999 1:40 AM Subject: [newbie] Network Card Support I found out the hard way that my network card is not supported with Linux Mandrake. Re: [newbie] How do I get Bootmagic to see Linux Partition
Hi Sevatio. Just go the BootMagic Configuration utility in the Start Menu, click on Add, and select Linux. You may want to select the advanced button and choose the partition (root) where you installed Lilo, although that shouldn't be necessary. - Original Message - From: Sevatio Octavio To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 19, 1999 8:41 PM Subject: [newbie] How do I get Bootmagic to see Linux Partition My problem:Bootmagic only displays the win98 partition. Also along the way, the linux installation process asked to format the new partitions and I chose yes. Question:How do I get bootmagic to display both the win98 and linux partition? Re: [newbie] How do I get Bootmagic to see Linux Partition
OOPS! Sorry Sevatio, forget that last reply. Just re-read your message and I believe your problem has to do with Boot Magic not being able to see the partitions you re-created with Disk Druid. You're gonna have to delete all the Linux partitions with Partition Magic, and then re-create and format them. Then re-install with Druid and simply edit each partition to set the mount points, don't do any further partitioning! You can format them again if you wish to be sure the filesystem's ok. Be sure to install LILO in the root partition and not the MBR, and set it to boot only Linux. Hope this solves your problem!
