[newbie] External DVD Players

2003-04-01 Thread Robert F. Trettel

Hi, All

I have a Dell Latitude C10. Have installed 9.1,so
far working.
Now if I can get my external DVD player to work
this would be
great
The player connects via PCMCIA card
bus(Addonics).
The player itself is a Pocket DVD Rom
(Addonics).
It is not picked up on install or by
probe

Any ideas?? or suggestions

[newbie] Networking setup

2001-09-08 Thread Robert F. Trettel

Hi All,

I am in the process of building a 3 computer network which is as
follows:
Tower acting as server
a desktop as a workstation
and a laptop workstation needs to be removable from network

That said now the laptop has a problem the linksys EtherFast 10/100 is
not reginized hear a long and short beep when inserting.
Did some checking at Linksys web site, they say to get it to work have to
do
some compiling. heck I can just barely get things done as is.
Have tons of books on Linux, but they all talk way above me.
Does anybody know of a network card that is *no* problem??
So far I can ping the tower at Ip address and dns. Can ping the desktop
at its IP address but not its dns.

Hope somebody can lend a hand (not geek)
Thanks

I've got an old 56k winmodem. Any recommendations for a replacement
that'll work with Mandrake 8? Price is an issue...

if you have a hdd big enough you can install linux mandrake.

[newbie] Monitor's

2000-06-16 Thread Robert F. Trettel

Hi, All

Just got a new monitor and find its not listed anywhere in the selection
area in the install. I think its to new to show up.
Its a ViewSonic A70, the manual says it is pre-adjusted to VESA 1024x768@75Hz.
What would be a good guess as to a proper and safe monitor??

Thanks for any ideas
Robert F. Trettel

BTW its a 17inch

[newbie] Packages

2000-06-13 Thread Robert F. Trettel

Hi,All

I have a question on packages that are on Linux. Is there a web site that
gives details of what the package is and etc?? I would like to be able to
know what to install and what I don't need. I think I am wasting space by
taking everything that is offered in the install.
This way I will know what is what as to everyday use of Linux.

Thanks

Re: [newbie] Down with LILO!

2000-05-11 Thread Robert F. Trettel

BootMagic will find your Linux partition and then you add it to your list
of bootable partitions
Wayne Petherick wrote:

If
I do this will BootMagic still boot Linux OK? I thought LILO was
the program required to actually boot linux and if I do this won't it stop
Boot Manager picking up that Linux is installed?Wayne

Hi,
You can run fdisk /mbr that will take Lilo out , then install your boot
manger of chose. That's what I have done. Hope this helps
