Can the download version support saving profile to usb key? To the best of my knowledge it does not. read the archives http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/newbie-zhcn/ there is a long dis-cuss ion about it The boxed version and the version for silver club members and above are different in that they have commercial drivers included. (nVidia, ATI, etc). MM requires X to run, which makes it impossible to use on some machines if you don't have these commercial drivers. (Since you can't change the XF86config-4 file to your setup if it doesn't work) My brief attempt to test mandrake move ended in disgust, MCC was so slow to start (10 minutes on a P4 3GHz) that it stopped being usable. The network was hard work to configure, etc. Getting my USB key to work was also a PITA, but apparently MM is very selective about which key's will work. Knoppix outclasses this version of MM by a large amount IMO. we'll see what/if MMv2 will bring... Simon Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Re: Moving from windows to linux in the enterprise
Hi Jamie I setup a complete IT system for our small company (16-20 people) using mandrake Linux 9.1 (and some other stuff) I'll see if I can write more about this, but I have to go now The summary is, things are working quite well, but there's a lot of things that are hard or impossible or unavailable at this moment. It does require a lot of ajusting when coming from windows L8r Simon Jamie Kerwick wrote: With the success of My Mandrake 9.0 Intranet server, My boss recently expressed an interest in moving our entire company's IT from Windows servers desktops to either: A) a Totally linux based solution. B) windows servers with Linux Clients C) Linux servers with windows desktops. My question, well request really, is for any information, or suggestions of web-sites that may be of use when doing a business proposal for this. Plus any recommended software replacements plus recommendations of with linux distros to use would be very much appreciated (obviously I would like to use Mandrake as I have used this in the past.) The systems we currently use are: Win2k Servers using Active Directory (for authentication and also user information directory) DNS (Bind?) DHCP, Oracle 8i server (hosted on a cluster server) Cognos(reports from our oracle database) Exchange (email, calendar, meeting room booking, tasks etc..) MS Office 2k (obvious replacement being Open Office) Terminal Server, Remote Dial-in Users, Scan-file (scanned document management) Additionally we want to use: Electronic faxing, Web Proxying, (squid?) [newbie] Re: Net Install ISO
HaywireMac wrote: Someone asked me if there is a net install ISO for Mandrake, as he does not have a floppy drive and would rather do a net install than download the ISO's in full. Anyone know of such a thing? I checked the Mandrake mirrors, but they only seem to have floppy images. Good question ;-) I think that in theory you should be able to make an el torito??? CD using the floppy boot image from the mdk cds. I never tried this though... Cheers Simon Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Re: screensavers
Inhabitant of Zion wrote: Where are the kscreensaver modules? I installed 9.2 from the download CDs and they're not visible in the control center. Phew! So I am not the only one then! There is a screensaver of sorts that works automatically - the mandrake slideshow thing (not to my taste TBH!). I migrated to Gnome and the screensavers all work on that so I never got around to trying to work out what was going on. Hope you have better success... as root: cd /usr/share mkdir applnk-mdk.hidden cd applnk-mdk.hidden ln -s ../applnk/System/ScreenSavers urpmi kdeartwork of course, you could also install xscreensaver and disable kde screensavers alltogether. If you have a decent GL supported card, there are some really cool screensavers in both xscreensaver and the kdeartwork ones Cheers Simon Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
