[newbie] can't access rpmdrake or DrakConf

2002-02-17 Thread stan lockaby

Hi list,

After running LM-8 for 3 to 4 months with near flawless performance, I have
suddenly begun having many strange problems. My X session will often freeze,
along with the keyboard, forcing me to do a reset. I have re-installed
several times, to no avail. Now I can't get rpmdrake or DrakConf to run,
either from the KDE desktop, or from the shell. I get the following message
from the shell:
Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Xlib: connection to :0.0 refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
Sun Feb 17 14:31:45 2002 Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0 at
/usr/X11R6/bin/DrakConf.real line 53.
I have completely reformated my disk when re-installing, allthough I don't
know if that actually removes any corrupt data. I dual boot with Win 98 on a
seperate drive, LILO is the boot loader. I hope this is enough info. Please
help! Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

[newbie] CD Rom not working with KDE CD Player

2001-09-23 Thread Stan Lockaby

Greetings all. I'm running LM8. I have recently installed a CD-RW, which is
the master drive, and my pre-existing CD Rom is slave. So, the CD-RW is hdc
and the CD Rom is hdd. My problem is that I can't play CDs with KDE's CD
Player. It works with hdc, but not with hdd. Is this because this is not the
master drive? (I have changed the configuration in CD Player to read
dev/hdd). Any help appreciated.

Re: [newbie] filters in Kmail

2001-09-14 Thread Stan Lockaby

Here's what I had as a filter for the Newbie list in KMail back when I used
it (I have since switched to Sylpheed):

 any header contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've had a 100% success rate with this.

In replying to this post, I wish to thank all who responded. I'll play with
all of this a bit, and see what happens. Thanks much.

Peace,
Stan

[newbie] filters in Kmail

2001-09-13 Thread Stan Lockaby

Greetings all. I have my filters set up in Kmail so that anything with
Newbie in the subject line or in the to field should be sent to another
folder. This mostly works, but many posts from this slip through to my inbox.
Upon examination, I can see no reason why these misbehaving posts are any
different from others that are filtered. I am running LM8. Any ideas?
TIA,
Peace

I am set up with a dual boot - Windoze98, and LM8. I just installed a Plextor
12/10/32 over the weekend. I bought this drive base on input from several
people knowledgeable in unix, linux, and windoze. I can tell you that it is a
very good, solid drive. I have it set up under W98, but the drivers are
established for linux, and I'll tackle the setup in Mandrake in the next few
days. Being a recovering windowsaholic, this may or may not go well. I still
know very little about linux, and the learning curve is steep for me, but I'm
convinced it is a far superior OS, and I will do what it takes to rid myself
and my family of the dreaded windows virus. Anyway, my point being that if
the setup of the plextor goes well, I will post results... if not, I will
post many questions. And not to make light of the current situation here, but
while we are all praying, thank God for this list.
Peace,
Stan

First off..as of right now we have absolutely no FACTS that state that this

And Nicolas, My post is not only directed to you but to the whole of what i

Thirdly, Come on men (and women) stop thinking and be with your families.
Be glad you have them and pray that you will have them along time. Extend
your sympathies to the all of those affected by this tradegy, no matter how

fourthly, forgive me for breaking going back on my word and posting
this-but if we are going to discuss something like this off topic I would
hope that everyone could keep their chin and spirits up and not sucomb to

Very well said. Thanks.

 Hi

I personally found that a Geforce 2 MX is the best all round card on
the market. It isn't a high end gaming card, but you can still get 50+
FPS in a game which is nice if you need to unwind. The duel head
support is also very nice in terms of a do presentations for work, and
so is the TV out. the nvidia drivers are amazing and are very simple
 to setup and use. HTH

 Greetings,
I am considering installing a new video card, and am seeking any
 advice on
what I should look for as far as compatibiliy with LM8 is concerned.
 I'm not
looking for a high end gaming card, just a good solid casual user card
 that
is known to be configurable with LM8. Any suggestions?
 TIA, stan

Thanks very much for the response, Robert. I'm not very familiar with
graphics cards, and this info is very helpful.
