[newbie] I keep having to redo sndconfig...

2002-01-16 Thread chris huston

Hi

Ocassionally i need to venture out of my user session..i logout.. do
something then i come back to kde/gnome. Everytime I return,
I need to su and run sndconfig.. Because my sound device is being used by
something else at least thats what linux tells me. So i run sndconfig,
listen to mr torvales, and i'm fine i can listen to xmms/realplay etc.
...Is this something he built into the kernal?
Or there a problem with a init file somewhere?

thanks,
chris

RE: [newbie] AOL and Mandrake 8.0

2001-10-23 Thread Chris Huston

aol no workie... period

Please be aware that aol changes windows registry settings,
updated/pollutes your network setting... denudes ie,
changes your modem dialing string.. and
then
when you update your windows, using windows update...
or when you install software that looks for the windows default
setting/files in the preffered locations... those files are
gone or renamed to aol equivelents.

microsoft will attempt to replace the files, but aol will the
re update your system, before you log off...

its the same with real audio... and micros media player...

its a battle zone

don't get me started about the cute little icons each program
sticks in my system tray

i hate winblows...

I'm a bit late with this one! I had a chat with AOL's online help, I wrote a
large paragraph of my situation, saying what info I needed , or thought I
needed, to get AOL going in Win4Lin. His answer, AOL does not support
Linux, 10 minutes of arguing later and it ends with a thank you and good
bye. Now I know AOL aren't considered the best ISP around but I have no
other problems with them, and they're cheap! I'm going home to try it again,
the setup, not the arguing!! I'll let you know if it all goes t*ts up!!!

Has anyone heard of aol being got running using WINE or WIN4LIN or
something like that? I ask because I'm using aol as a dial-up (flat rate
unmetered access) while waiting for NTL cable modem to come to my area!

 Thanks

Re: [newbie] Unattached inode 418928 UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY

2001-09-05 Thread Chris Huston

Did you run fsck /dev/hda/

/dev/hda being your hard drive.[it may be /dev/hdb]
read the docs..
check the
man fsck
or
info fsck
for the options available

don't be afraid..

 I'm told to RUN fsck

That doesn't do any good. But I AM able to access
Linux by entering the root password. But then I don't
 know what to do.

HELP! I'm completely out of business, but don't think
I should reinstall (and lose all previous gains/work.
