Re: [newbie] Pre-newbie here!

2003-11-10 Thread lduvall
When you go to install Linux, it will ask you which drive and you will
have the opportunity to set up the required swap file as well as the Linux
file system. The installer routine will format everything as you request.
I will leave it to others to tell you WHICH specification to use for
determining how to format your old drive - don't want you mad at me!

I installed MDK 9.1 on my desktop and my new laptop without a hitch - well
without any serious hitches. It is so much easier than the earlier
releases!

 Hello,

This is my first post to this list (I've been lurking for a few
 days...it sure is a busy list! :-)).

After trying to figure out if my assorted bits of hardware can be
expected to play nicely with a fresh Linux distribution
installation, I've decided that the only thing to do is to take the leap
and see what happens! :-) I've just ordered the Mandrake 9.2
PowerPack, and anxiously await its arrival!

This is a new computer, with *mostly* new hardware inside (there is,
from my old computer, a spare 20 GB hard drive and an older model
GeForce2 MX-400 graphics card with 64 MB video RAM), and there are a few
external hardware bits from my old system as well (a four year old
Lexmark 3200 printer, and relatively new Creative I-Trigue 3500
speakers). I'm also currently using a Linksys external cable modem that
some have told me might be a problem with Mandrake, so I'm
looking into a proper ethernet card.

 Anyway, here's my plan...

I have two hard drives in this machine:

C:\ is an 80 GB drive with WinXP installed
D:\ is a 20 GB drive, onto which I intend to install Mandrake 9.2

As I mentioned, the 20 GB drive is from my old computer (other than
size, it's got the same specs as my new 80 GB drive (Seagate 7200 RPM
 ATA-100).

Here's my essential question of the moment...

I'm finished copying over all the files I want to save from the old
drive to the new one, and I'm ready to clear the old drive in
preparation for my Mandrake installation. I've been told that the
Windows method of formatting the drive will not be the thing to do
here. So...how do I clear this old drive to get it ready for a clean
 installation of Mandrake?

I'm sure that once I've installed Mandrake, I'll have at least 5000 more
questions for this already busy list! :-)

 Thanks!

Re: [newbie] dependencies - what to do?

2003-11-09 Thread lduvall
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!

I had the same problem, but (probably) with a different program. I don't
remember which program, but there were inter-dependencies between two or
three sets of files, and none of them would install because they all
needed each other. What a pain!

I finally got fed up and told rpm to load all of the programs - and the
darned thing went on and installed everything just as smooth as could be!

Sorry, I only had this one experience, and I don't normally use rpm from
the command line, so I can't give you the details on what I did - but
instead of trying to install A and then install B, I gave the command
sequence to install A B - and it worked!

Let us know if it works for you!

Good luck!

LeRoy

 Hi,
I know I'm not the first to have problems with dependencies, but it's
the first time for me and I've been unable to find a page that tells me
actually what to do in this case.

 I'm trying to install Mplayer.
 I downloaded mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1.i386.rpm and double-clicked on it.
 and Kpackage reported the following:
 error: failed dependencies:
   mplayer-skin is needed by mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1
   mplayer-common = 1.0pre2 is needed by mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1
   libpng.so.2 is needed by mplayer-gui-1.0pre2-1
 RESULT=1

so I went googling and found the first two files.
[Oh btw what's up with the whole program being 1.8M but the SKIN IS OVER
 4M???]

mplayer-common was the first one to finish downloading, so I
 double-clicked on it and got:
 error: failed dependencies:
   mplayer = 0.92 is needed by mplayer-common-0.92-1
 RESULT=1

so now it seems I've got two programs saying they need each other, but
 neither will install first...
 What should I do next?

 TIA for your help...
 :)

Re: [newbie] teething problems with 9.2

When you are in command line/text mode, does the GUI start if you type
startx?

LeRoy

I have just upgraded from 9.0 to 9.2 and My computer is now running
about as well as when I ran windows :o(

Firstly, In lilo if i select linux 9.2 boots ok, but into text mode.
The nice pretty GUI has gone and I don't know how to start it again. If
I reboot and select old_linux, the computer boots into 9.2 with a
working GUI. Is this major reason for concern? If not, how do I
re-configure lilo to boot old_linux as the default?

Secondly, I cannot use GnomePPP to connect to the internet (does the
fact that I operate in KDE have anything to do with it?) GnomePPP dials
ok and then says that it's connected, but a few seconds later spits out
an error message saying it's unexpectedly quit.
When I go through the mandrake control centre and use DrakConnect things
work OK (hence this email!). Is there an easier way to launch
DrakConnect, or is there a way I can get KPPP back again?

Sorry about asking so many questions,
 I hope somebody can help.

Re: [newbie] Xfree86 nv vs. Nvidia drivers (was: Why do I have to start KDE manually?)

2003-11-04 Thread lduvall
When I installed the Nvidia drivers for my Dell Inspiron 8500 the image
went from having a 3-4 cm black band on the left and right sides (with the
nv driver) to completely filling the screen! I don't play games under
Linux (yet) so I can't address any possible fps changes.

Also, a very important point, it was more work reading the instructions
than it was to actually install the drivers! It was a snap!

  Tony.

  I don't believe that's the problem. I have a GeF4 and it works
out of the box with the Xfree86 'nv' driver. No need to install any
drivers. OTOH, there's no tellin what kind of bugs installin the
 proprietary nVidia driver can cause.

My box is equipped with a GeForce 4 Ti 4200. With the Xfree86 nv driver
some of the screensavers in Xscreensaver had an fps rate of just 5 to
 10. When I installed Nvidia's driver I saw an increase to about 40 fps.
So maybe the choice of driver isn't the problem in the above-mentioned
case, but the right driver can certainly mean a lot to performance.

Re: [newbie] Suggestions on Mandrake books

2003-10-28 Thread lduvall
I looked high and low for a Mandrake-specific book. The only one I could
find was the Definitive Manual. I got it and it appears to be very
comprehensive - but I have only looked at parts of it - not had it long
enough to give an overall impression - but at least for my needs it is the
only book in town.

You might want to check out one of the various linux command references. I
have one that is cross-referenced to MS-DOS commands - useful if you know
MS-DOS. However it is not a clearly laid out as one would hope, and as
always the case, there are commands that I hear/read about that are not
listed. Don't know if those are distribution-specific or not.

LeRoy

I think its best for me to get a book to help me with learning mandrake
9.1/linux in general. MI'm ccompletely new to linux and would say I'm an
intermediate - advanced windows user. I'm bad with technical jargon
like math books, so a nice easy guide would help me the best. Any
suggestions? How is the 'The Definitive Guide to Using Mandrake Linux' i
see on their store web site? I see that you can get the one with the
included cd's or dvd. Anyone have experience with those?
 Thanks

Without a doubt there are numerous web sites that have lots and lots of
valuable information - much more useful at times than a whole library of
OS books! However, they are hard to read when (1) the computer is down,

I cannot resolve the host with umpquabank.com. Yahoo should be easy,

With Yahoo, I would try clearing Mozilla's catch:
 Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Cache/Clear Cache.

With Umpqua Bank, I would try giving them a call and seeing if they
need to reboot their web server.

If this does not fix it, I would check with the Mozilla project folks,
because they may be more familiar with it.

Another possibility is that Umpqua may have changed their filters to

 Hi,

I am sorry to have to report it, but for me the BitTorrent download of
9.2 has been a bit of a disappointment:

For 2 days I tried several versions via Mozilla without success. My
own fault, I should have tested it earlier when I had a chance. Then I
happened to find the BitTorrent-shadowclient plus I gave it a go with
Konqueror. At last it worked and it started out reasonably well. The
first 2 or 3 days my download rates sometimes went as high as 12 or 14
kb/s. Then it trickled down. My highs became 3,4 or 5 kb/s. Sometimes
a little bit more, but never longer than a few minutes.

Yes, I like Plextor. BUT, when this first came up on the cooker

mostly all blacklisted by kernel.org. It's not a widespread
