You could try IglooFTP ( a search at Twocows will find it).
Not recommending it though, I am at present trying out GTM

WebDownloader (search http://wwwkrasu.ru/soft/chuchelo/) as
these are work possible work better with my web browsing.

Re: [newbie] How to find or list all active ports?

2000-07-16 Thread nikolaos mpenias

You can download a port-scan program called "nmap" form this site:

www.insecure.org/nmap/

After installing it just type "nmap 127.0.0.1" and it will scan all your
system ports. Just like that. There is also a man page, so you can see all
the capabilities of this software...

I'm wondering something. I was trying to unmount my cdrom. However whenever
I tried it kept coming back and saying it was busy. I tried several times
then finally gave up and rebooted. What should I have done to find out if
it was busy? I wasn't doing anything with it. I had mounted it, looked
through it, realized I didn't need it and tried to unmount it. I was in the
/ directory when I tried unmounting it and I was root.

Thanks.

2000-06-24 Thread nikolaos mpenias

How can i mount an audio cd?
I can use them when i run an audio CD player with no problem, but when i try
to mount the cd from a terminal i get the message:

"/dev/cdrom: Input/output error
mount: /dev/cdrom has wrong major or minor number"

Why is that?
I have vi-ied the "/etc/filesystems" file with these possible file formats.

vfat
iso9660
cdfs
cdudfrw
joliet
AIFC
AIFF
RIFF
iso8859-1

Re: [newbie] MPEG Player and Action failure

2000-06-24 Thread nikolaos mpenias

Yes, there is one and ,in fact, it the best one for Linux.
It called "mtv" and you can download it from TUCOWS
The problem is that it is for evaluation only. It plays mpeg's normaly, but
after a while it stops playing the sound.
You just need to get a registered number from the official site , but with a
cost.

I noticed that Action can't reproduce well some MPEG film. Nobody knows if
there
some MPEG players better than Action that work well like the Windoze mpeg
player? The difference between action and the windows mpeg player is quite
big so i hope an affermative answer

Re: [newbie] Shutting down X

2000-06-24 Thread nikolaos mpenias

The easiest way is to press "Ctrl+Alt+Fx" where x is 1-6.
The Mandrake doesn't have the option to run in console mode when you wish it
by pressing SHUTDOWN from the login, whereas other (Caldera for example) do.
I don't know if there is a way to enable this option somehow.
If anyone knows, please post it out...

Linux content follows...:)

I am just wondering when this list became "Official Bash MS Windows, Linux
Rules" mail list. Personally I am sick of seeing the majority of list
users
bashing MS Windows when this is in fact a _Linux_ list. We all had to
start
somewhere, and for most of us MS Windows was the only game in town. I
think
at least every third message that is posted in here contains derogatory
comments about MS. For those that don't agree with my comments send the
flames to /dev/null.
IMO:)

Linux content:...

Has anyone tried Hopkins FBI located on the Maximum Linux CD June/July 2000
issue? I installed it and the games works ok...but there is no sound from
my
SB AWE 64 sound card.
Any suggestions about this game?
TIA

Try Grass4.3

I am looking for a mapping program. I am now using one that is windoze
based. I need to be able to input data from the map i.e. cordinates and
text in to a gps unit. Any thing out there for linux that can fill this
need. If you know of any program that will allow me to input data into a
gps unit but is not a mapping program let me know too please .

Also, If I find a program that is for linux and it offers all types of
flavors for download will the one for RedHat be the best choice for
Mandrake.

Thanks in advance for the help
