[newbie] kde 3.1 installation and config

2003-02-27 Thread sean jacobs
i was wondering if perhaps someone could let me know where the config files
for the kde start menu are at...i just compiled and installed 3.1 last
night but can't figure out how exactly to add all the applications that were
in my old kde menu to my new one. it would be much easier if i could just
cut/paste some lines from one config file to another rather than using the
menu editor application to add everything i need. plus i've already
overwritten most of the old kde binaries so i'm not sure exactly what/where
everything is that used to be in the menu. i've tried going through ~/.kde
and even copied that directory from another user account who hadn't used kde
3.1 yet to my own in hopes that it would provide the same menu configuration
but i was wrong.

also i can't seem to figure out how to make the new kdm boot kde 3.1.i was
not able to add fluxbox to kdmrc for 3.0 because it would get overwritten
after every reboot and when it would not boot kde 3.1 for some reason, i
started using the kdm for 3.1. now it will boot fluxbox but kde 3.1 just
makes the screen flicker a few times but goes back to the kdm login,
eventhough i can boot kde 3.1 with a startx from console. if anyone can
offer some insight on either of these matters it would definately be
appreciated, thanks

[newbie] kde help

2003-02-26 Thread sean jacobs
a few days ago i was having trouble adding fluxbox to my window manager list
in kdm. i decided to go ahead and upgrade to kde 3.1. now fluxbox is added
to my list but there are too additional problems. for some reason i cannot
get the new kdm to boot kde, but kde works fine when i run startx from from
console. also i need to figure out how to add all of the applications from
kde 3.0 menu to 3.1's.

i'm hoping to find a better way than adding everything with the kde menu
editor tool individually because it would be much simpler to just cut and
paste from one file to another and because i don't want to search for the
paths for everything.

thanks in advance for any help

[newbie] printing and kdmrc

2003-02-24 Thread sean jacobs
I have been having a couple of problems with kdm and printing i was hoping
someone could help me out with.

first off..whenever i reboot linux, i have to readd the printer every time.
i have yet to figure out why. my printer is detected properly and prints the
test page during mandrake installation and after i reinstall the printer
with printtool, but every time i reboot, i have to remove and readd the
printer with printtool. i have an hp officejet 570, using the driver
reccomended by printtool.

Secondly, i have been trying to add a window manager (fluxbox) to the kdm
login menu. everything works fine until i reboot and my modified kdmrc is
apparently overwritten. until i reboot, everything is fine and it's on the
menu, but once i reboot, the changes to kdmrc are gone. after modifying it
again and restarting kdm its fine again so i'm pretty sure that's that only
problem. i have sifted through /etc/rc.d/* with regrep and haven't found the
problem yet. i followed a few leads from there to a few other files but
still haven't found a script that overwrites kdmrc. can someone offer me
some insight on this problem?

thanks in advance
