If you do not have fglrx.0 in
 /lib/modules/kernel-mdk/kernel/drivers/char/drm/ you probably did not.

Also during fglrxconfig there is a question about compatibility, i.e.
default, fast operation and compatibility operation; the default for
this is #0 but with a Radeon #1 should be chosen.

The driver will work, I am using it on a cooker system with a Radeon

Do you have the kernel-source installed for your version if the kernel.

 rpm -q kernel-source.

The ATI driver build is different from that of the nvidia.
The fglrx driver will build even if the kernel-source is not installed
But dri will be disabled because no drm module is created.

The XF86Config-4 you list is that for the radeon driver Not that for
the glfrx driver which the ATI installation should create.

I have attached mine for you to see.

funky now, but with an external moniter, it's fine. well..

i couldn't get windows to go through an install. was having problems with
it. it kept locking up. well, the hard drive had been formatted during the
windows 98se install, so i couldn't get into windows. so i attempted to
see if i was having hardware or software problems. my solution...install
linux md9.1. well, i cleared out the partitions on the hard drive (was
split in 2 when windows was installed). i then went and let linux take the
entire 4gb hard drive. the install went over fine. i booted into KDE and
everything was good. well, then i decided i needed to try windows again,
as the PC is the primary computer and i was trying to get the laptop up and
running again so myself and the wife could use it with windows (more for
her than me really). so i went and started a re-install of linux, got to
 the
partitioning section, formatted the hard drive completely, restarted the
laptop, and went and started with a windows install. the windows install
went over smoothly, or so i thought. the laptop started up after the
install, and it went to the linux boot options. Houston, we have a
problem. there's no option for windows, and linux isn't on the laptop
anymore. ok, thought i could handle this...i went and restarted with
the windows CD, went into MSDOS, deleted the hard drive, re-installed the
hard drive, restarted the laptop with the windows Cd in again. it then
told me that the hard drive was not formatted and i needed to format to
continue with an install. i thought i had fixed it. re-installed windows.
rebooted the systemthe linux dual boot option came up again! the hard
drive was 100% unconditionally formatted according to windows.

so did i really make a big mistake? the drive was set as a FAT32 drive. i
don't know how to go in and remove the dual boot option so i can just put
plain old windows on the laptop again.

to anyone that can help, please keep in mind that you are giving advice to
someone that knows NOTHING about programming. i'm COMPLETELY new to this
stuff. i've said it in other e-mails to the list recently, but i'll say it
againbasic linux starts in a week or so and until that starts, i'm
 completely clueless about programming.

have i completely ruined my laptop for windows now? if i have, it's bitter
sweet, because it'll give me a computer to experiment on with linux
programming before i go and mess up the PC, but i'd like to have windows
back on it again and have 2 computers in the house. thanks to all!

message on the screen and then locks up with all the lights on the keybaord
flashing..

It works if I take a dimm out of the machine reducing it to 512MB..

System configuration is

Epox 4GEA+ Motherboard (Intel 845GE Chipset)
P4 2.53
1gb Samsung DDR 333 Ram

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

It just flashes the message on the screen briefly, the screen goes black and
then all he keyboard lights flash. (The machine locks up.)

We've noticed that by forcing particular kernel parameters during the
 installation, especially with RAM, can alleviate installation problems;
I'm really rather surprised that this is happening, but firstly, what is
 the message that you're given?

Thanks all.

I used a non graphical boot menu and told it not to use a frame-buffer.

It now boots fine, I only see 800mb of ram but hell its better than 512mb.

Thanks again

You are getting this because the default kernel is compiled to support RAM
up to 896MB To address larger memory you have to load with the 'Enterprise
kernel' (It is on your CDs)

However do not be surprised if your system runs *slower* with the high
memory upport. This is because the kernel has to perform extra operations
 to address large memory.

 derek

You right I might not need more than 512MB ram, but
remember one Famouse person once said a pc will never need more than 640KB of
ram...

what happened there?

hehehehe

Add 'mem=860M' to your lilo.conf's append line, and then run
'lilo'. You can then shut down and put the other ram back in.
Should eliminate the kernel panic on boot. Another option is to
install the enterprise kernel. It's capable of addressing 1gb and
more of ram. BUT, you're better off performance wise usin the
regular kernel and limiting ram to 860. OTOH, I doubt you'll ever
need more than 512 anyhow ;)
