Thanks all of you for the quick replies. I have tried the modifications told. But I still am getting the same set of error messages.
I deleted the file /tmp/.X0-lock.
I even renamed the file .Xauthority to /old.Xauthority.
And when I say startx again I got the same problem. Can I do something else, or did I miss something?
Thanks a lot again in advance.

I checked up if there is a file called .X0-lock, but there was nothing like that in the tmp directory of the root as well as the users. I need to get back to the graphics mode as my research is completely using that option. Please help . cache and if you shutdown suddenly the Hard drive does not have time to be updated and may be corrupted. You should perform a graceful shutdown as described herehttp://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/81/en/ref.html/ts-system-freeze.htmlThirdly. You are very much less likely to get a Hard drive corruption in the future if you select a Journalised File system. LM8.1 defaults to Ext2 file system which is not journalised. However you can upgrade it to a journalised Ext3 system quite easily without reinstalling or losing any data.http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/81/en/ref.html/ext2fs.htmlJust open Mandrake Control CentreHardwareDiskdrake highlight the partition you want to convert, select Ext3 file system and 'Done'HTHderekWant to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
