[newbie] gaim

2004-10-17 Thread Lee Wiggers
Okay

I have gaim installed, I have signed in to Yahoo Messenger in Win2k.

Problem is gaim says incorrect password when I try to check in. I
have verified password, case, and then checked in successfully again
in wink2. Connection is through the same router to the same isp.

Any ideas?

I have found that the password saving function in the past few
versions of GAIM are flaky at best; with Yahoo! delete and then recreate
the account - do NOT save the password - and it should work without
flaw; I thought at first that someone was logged into my Yahoo! account,
but after some experimentation, found this to be the issue.

[newbie] Gaim-Fixed Problem

2004-10-17 Thread Lee Wiggers
The fix is disappointing.

I urpme'ed the mdk that urpmi installs, then dl'ed the
gaim-1.0.1-0mdk9.2.i586.rpm from sourceforge. It installs and runs
properly as far as I can tell. At least I can login now.

Thanks to the person who suggested sourceforge in the first place.
It would have saved me another couple of hours of mdk frustration
had I listened.

I was reluctant to try it because the MDK 9.2 rpm for 0.77 didn't work
for my 10.0 installation. I'm not sure why that is and I've forgotten
the symptoms that I encountered but I was able to find a 10.0 rpm for
0.77 that worked well. I keep telling myself I need to learn more about
rolling my own, so to speak, but between long work hours and family, it
just never seems to happen. I usually am comfortable installing from
sources but GAIM upgrades so often that I prefer to use rpms with this
particular app.

gyach-enhanced works with webcam and you can listen to voice chat though I haven't
been able to get my mic to work. Needs pygtk and pygtk devel packages installed
(included in the distro CD's).

http://phpaint.sourceforge.net/pyvoicechat/index_gyache.html

Get the binary .tar.bz2, move it to / then uncompress it. it'll be located in
/usr/local/bin/gyach
I've used it with both Mandrake 9.2 and 10. The rpm doesn't work for mdk though so be
sure you get the one that has binary in it and is a .tar.bz2

My gaim just suddenly stopped connecting to msn - has any else had this

Any ideas? I had it going just before and rebooted - now (and on
subsequent reboots) it won't connect.

Look at the FAQ on gaim's site. It may be an ssl problem.
See the following: http://gaim.sourceforge.net/gaim-ssl.txt

No...each network is separate.

Freenode is a Linux specific one.

the one i'm on is Bondage.com port 6667

Currently gtksourceview does not provide php.lang therefore does not
provide highlighting for php.

In my screem-0.8.2-0.1 build I did include, as an additional source, a
php.lang file, which with the installation of screem-0.8.2 is installed
in /usr/share/gtksourceview-1.0/language-specs allowing for php
highlighting.
This is not an official file, and because it actually should belong to
another pkg, will most likely not be included in the mdk screem release.

ok, i thougth this was a dead issue because i got it resolved, BUT.

i got a new mouse yesterday, upgraded from a regular 2 button mouse to a
Logitech mouse with the scroll wheel, and it's one of those optical mice, so
no more ball in the bottom to get gunked up :)

anyway, now i've got some more problems.

first, i can't paste into a GAIM IM window with the mouse. i can use CTRL V
to do it, but can't use the mouse buttons to do it. i can, however, use the
right button to paste anything else in any window. so maybe i have something
set wrong, but i can't quite put my finger on it. i've played with all the
settings i can find, and i went in and told the mdk control center i was
using a different mouse (it didn't change anything when i booted up the
system).

the second issue i'm having is that the scroll wheel doesn't scroll. i've
done some google searches for an answer but all i can find says that it needs
to be told the scroll wheel's movement is the 4th and 5th mouse buttons, but
i can't find anything that says how to change that. but my best guess is
that making the scroll wheel act like it's buttons 3, 4, and 5 will solve the
scrolling problem. anyone know what i have to do to make it do this?

the third issue is the mouse is kinda sketchy. now i do have 2 dogs and a
cat, and they do shed quite a bit, and i've seen that when the optical part
picks up a stray hair, the mouse will be a little sketchy. but there have
been a few other times that it's been clean in there and it was a little
sketchy. is there a fix for this?

help greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Hmm, mine works fine here with right click+ paste. Also works with
middle click or Ctrl-V. Which version are you using, the
gaim-0.59.8-2mdk package that comes with 9.1? Gaim just did a lot of
updating to gtk2, so you might want to try a newer version from cooker
(gaim-0.64-3mdk). I seem to remember I didn't like gaim-0.59.8 much.

Also, I find the rpms that Gaim itself distributes to be just squiffy.
I am using 0.64 now, but am in the process of updating to 0.66. They
make mdk rpms. Whatever you do, don't use .65- I think it was pretty
broken.

Here's the link to find packages:

hth,

If you have the Texstar rpm repository set up in urpm you can install
0.66 as easy as pie. It works better than any of the previous versions
I've used.

Also, I find the rpms that Gaim itself distributes to be just squiffy.
I am using 0.64 now, but am in the process of updating to 0.66. They
make mdk rpms. Whatever you do, don't use .65- I think it was pretty
broken.

Re: [newbie] gaim crash - won't go away!

Ctl+Alt+Esc then click on the locked up window
There is also an icon on your desktop called XKill
Click on that then click on the failed application

Ctl+Alt+Backspace to kill your KDE session

All this stuff is covered in the manual which is accessed by the
Documentation icon on your desktop.

file:/usr/share/doc/mandrake/en/ref.html/ts-killing-apps.html

To stop gaim starting automatically when you log in, then kill gaim, log off
with the 'restore desktop' box checked. Log off.
Next time you log on gaim will not start, but be sure that the next time you
log off the 'restore session' box is unchecked.

People always get confused by the restore session thing.
KDE in fact will 'always' restore a session. Checking the box simply tells
KDE to restore 'this' session. If the box is not checked it will restore from
a previous session when the box 'was' checked.

open a text console (or term) to log in (as root you if you need to kill a
program started as root, type su [enter] root [enter] type password for root,
do not expect to see anything echped to screen as you type the password) type
top [enter] (without the quotes) and look for gaim there are a few ways to
sort top, and a few ways to get the same info (ps aux gives the whole
she-bang of running processes) then you will see the number of the processes
gaim started. and in top, you can do k 3407 [enter, enter] (changing 3407
to match whatever number is the assigned number for the process)

This version of GAIM is outdated and will always return that error probably
thanks to the efforts of aol). Either try the updated version (go to
Freshmeat) or try aol's own beta version for linux. My sons use that and it
works extremely well (I'm NOT, personally, an IM user ;o) )

I still say GAIM is 1000x better than the AOL-AIM Linux client, and I'd
rather go with GAIM regardless...I won't even list the many reasons why!

Go to the AOL site and download their Linux port of AIM. You will be much
happier with that one. Operates just like the windows version. Easy to
 install also.

Re: [newbie] GAIM L-M 7.1

2000-08-15 Thread Support

I've upgraded to the 0.9.20 version. Now, the system makes the most
gadawful noise when a message is received, etc.

Is anyone else having any difficulties? I have found the setup screen to
turn sounds on/off, but not where to specify which sound is played. What
is the sound supposed to be? Is it configurable?

All other system sounds work correctly (running KDE).

Thanks,

[newbie] GAIM L-M 7.1

2000-08-13 Thread Michael Scottaline

Anyone know if the GAIM that comes with 7.1 works, or has AOL sabotage the
configuration? My sons use AIM in W98 and it's about the only thing they log
into windows for. If I can get GAIM working they'd probably stick to linux
exclusively. When I enter one their login names and password, it comes back
"no configuration". If I use the wrong password, I get the error message
"Login failed" or something to that effect. I don't see anything that would
allow me to make special configuration arrangements w/i GAIM itself.
Any suggestions?

TIA,
Mike

The GAIM that came with 7.1 does NOT work as it is not configured properly. Also,
I believe it is 0.9.19 and there is a newer version out on their website. Go to
http://www.marko.net/gaim. Click on their "Official FTP Site" and go to the
0.9.20 RPM -- download it and install it. It no longer comes up on your menu but
if you Alt F2 and type in gaim you get it.
