[newbie] General Questions

2002-01-22 Thread Paul Kraus

open office handles most msoffice files well. i personally have some
trouble
with odd tables in word docs from time to time but othere than that
fairly
well.

as for software, are you installing mandrake rpms? running kde? more
info!
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Running KDE and using RPS and sometimes GZ files which I cant seem to
install at all. How do you uninstall something? This is OS is very
daughnting at first. But I like it :)

as for links, http://www.mandrakeuser.org/index.php and for general
linux

 Ok I need to be able to access / change MS Office Files. If I can do
 this accurtly then I can completely remove the need of Windows. Also
 there some kind of Term Emulator I can run? I need to attach to a unix

 host and have it support sco ansi ect. Any one have any good links to
 beginers info? I can get mandrake to run find now but I am very
 unclear as to what I am doing or why something worked. Installing
 software bewilders me. Rpm files install but then don't create any
 icons to load them. If I navigate to the bin directory I can find the
 executable but they are all in the directory. That seem rather
 troublesome when it come to organization. Thanks

I need some kind of term emulater. I need to attach to unix box and run
are distribution software. Thourghbred in case you wanted to know. But
If i telnet I get this strange error which I have never seen. Currently
we have terminals attached to the unix box that log in with no problem
and we have windows machines running tiny term to attach form windows
with no problem. Neither of these methods have caused any problems in
the past. here is the error.

wow that was really odd. I just went back into the software to regenrate
the error and now it trys to let me in but the screen is jarbled but the
error is missing. It was there yesterday also. I wonder if i will only
recieve that error once each time i boot. But if that is true then I am
very confused. I think because telnet doesn't support SCO ansi the
screen gets garbled. I have tried to install minicom but I can't get it
to work.

P.S.
I am running evolve and I can't believe Microsoft hasn't sued. Its a
100% knock off of outlook. Down to the interface and right click menus.

  How do compile them manually? There are some gz files I can't find rpms
  for. I assume I can unzip them to any folder and then from what I read
  here compile them. What is the process for this.

Paul,

When you log into the Unix Box, what is TERM set to? At the
Unix command prompt: echo $TERM, also run stty and see it
that makes a difference. You could try setting TERM to vt102
or vt220, e.g. TERM=vt102; export TERM.

ok i tried logging back into the unix box. I attached fine. this is what I
did

$ echo $TERM
xterm
$ stty
speed 38400 baud;   ispeed 9600 baud;   ospeed 38400 baud;
rows = 24; columns = 85; ypixels = 0; xpixels = 0;
-parity hupcl
swtch = undef; susp = undef;
brkint -inpck icrnl onlcr tab3
echo -echoe echok
$ TERM=vt102
$ export TERM

i then loaded my software
-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
$ sol4

Basic was unable to locate either the TERMINAL id or the MODEL code in the
terminal definition file TCONFIGW. BASIC Windows can only be used if the
TERMINAL id and the MODEL code are defined in TCONFIGW. Restart BASIC
without using Windows and use *NPSD to define this terminal.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
I have been administrating this server and this software for over a year and
this is the only time I have seen this error. In linux. Also I can not use
backspace when I telnet in. either with GTelnet or Console-telnet.
