I solved the problem with grip (version 2.9) - it was only recording 3/4 of the song and then quitting. It was using "cdda2wav" for the rip and "lame" for the mp3 encoding - I changed the configuration of grip to use "bladeenc", instead of "lame" (had to install bladeenc first); now it rips and encodes the whole song easily.
