Not so - Gaim handles Oscar as well as other protocols. One just needs
to add the plugins from the gaim plugin directory.

So for the OP, one needs a different ID for say an AIM login, but you
use the same one for ICQ, just make sure the plugin is enabled for each
service you wish to use. I beleive the only default one is the AIM
 protocol.

Umm, just to clear things up here... the so-called ICQ2000 protocol is
in actual fact Oscar, and that is the exact same prototol for AIM. So
when you suggest to load the plugin for ICQ you are technically doing
things the hard way. The fact is that it is now so far that in GAIM you
do not have to load any plugin for ICQ, as you just add an account using
the Oscar protocol, but with your ICQ number in the place of your Username.

The plugin should have been removed some time back as it is
misleading... and although it works (sometimes not too well)) it's
totally unneccesary.

Hope this helps,

Ralph

[newbie] IM choice?

2002-02-09 Thread Todd Slater

Just curious about your choices for IM software that is compatible with
various services like Yahoo, MSN, AIM etc.

Gabber, Jabber, Everybuddy, GAIM, what's your favorite?

some sort so that we can teach web surfing, email, ftping, and instant
messaging. I am not very familiar with instant messaging at all. I've
used IRC a few times. No doubt people will want to learn ICQ and AOL,
(and the Microsoft thingie) -- is there a server that we can run on an
isolated network that can look like some or all of those?

I see that Jabber offers a light version of their server software, for up
to 100 users. See http://www.jabber.com/everywhere/index.shtml

Walter,

Though AIM and ICQ are both owned by AOL, they do not talk to one another so you'll
have to set-up a separate ID for GAIM (unless something has changed recently of which
I'm unaware).
