  Lars GTKam will show the kodak camera u have. It is a better front end
  for gphoto. HTH

I think the old gphoto is needed by GTkam (gphoto2) in order to work, but the 
added functionality of GTkam is better usb and more drivers. Just a guess.

My kodak DC280 camera have a usb interface. When i connect it I can see
it in the USB Viewer, but how do I get the file system mounted so I
can extract the pictures?

is your camera recognised as a usb-storage device?
as root load the usb-storage module:
#modprobe usb-storage
if you have no scsi devices then your camera may be mountable as device 
/dev/sda, in my case i have a scsi disk at sda so my camera is seen as 
/dev/sdb the files on it are accessed via /dev/sdb1
