Re: [newbie] LILO disappeared
Couple of things. An XP install can mess with the Hard disk partition table (swap the numbers around on it so hda6 becomes hda7 and vice-versa) See earlier posts this list by Civileme. If this has occurred you will have lost more than just LILO. Thats why installing XP before Linux is recommended. I appreciate it was a running dual boot machine. What it boils down to is you better have good backups. The splash screen that was talked about is the first screen that loads when you start an install. It has a pic of a penguin and the Mandrake logo among other things. It says down the bottom to hit [F1] for other options. Do this before it times out... then you can follow instructions at your leisure and start the rescue option which allows you to re-install LILO as a sub-option. After the installation of XP, I've seen that Windows removed LILO from the MBR ( $% Microsoft ). Unfortunatly ( Murphy's law ? ), I cannot find my boot disk anymore. Is it a way to recover or reinstall lilo without the boot disk ? Can I do it booting from the Mandrake Install CD ? I didn't tried that, because I'm scared it will re-install Mandrake and loose my current working configuration. Sorry, I'm not an expert in system managment with Linux. Re: [newbie] LILO disappeared
i dont think it will see ntfs..well i havent got it to..but hey you never know
Re: [newbie] LILO disappeared
Stephane- Sadly, I think you have to install XP first, then go back and install Linux second. Some of the distro's will offer to resize the partition, but only if it is FAT32, they will not touch the new NTFS type partition. -Scott At 01:30 PM 8/9/2002 -0400, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, Yesterday, I installed Windows XP on my computer. RE: [newbie] LILO disappeared
I've heard others mention this technique but I'm curious what actually happens since I've never had to do it before but will sometime next week. Does lilo find the Win2K partition and add it to the list or do you have to do that manually the next time you boot into linux? ::mark -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of John Richard Smith Sent: Friday, August 09, 2002 5:14 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] LILO disappeared [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, Yesterday, I installed Windows XP on my computer. You create a stanza, for each of the lilo entries, ext2 OS's, as well as windblows, only in the case of windlows you are in effect handing over the boot proceedure to windblows bootloader to complete. So if you intend doing it for an experiment, make sure you have printed off a copy of your existing /etc/lilo.conf first to refer to. In fact it's always a good idea to have a copy of both, /etc/lilo.conf , and /etc/fstab to hand. John -- John Richard Smith [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft?
