Ctl+Alt+F1 only moves you to a text console temporarily.
It will not affect any future boot. If your computer will only boot to text
then you have screwed it up in some other way.

(Ctl+Alt+F7 will bring you back to X from a text console)

Many thanks to all for the helpful advice.
I have Xwindows back now, but still some problems to sort.

This is strange. I use the Ctrl-Alt-F1 to change to the command line all
the time, and I don't run into this problem. You do have to hit Alt-F7
to get back to the X secession. (Standard install - this can be
changed.) But you should have gotten the GUI login back when you
rebooted as well.

In any case, if it is now booting into level 3, instead of level 5, you
can change this in a couple of ways. I believe drakconf offers an option
for this. Or you can edit /etc/inittab, and change

id:3:initdefault:
to
id:5:initdefault:
This should fix things, unless you did something to break the X server.
You can also run telinit 5 as root to change to run level 5, instead
of rebooting.

Thanks Stephen,

Yes I did try that, but I just get a blank screen.
Any more suggestions?

As was suggested before, you might want to check to see if the
/etc/inittab was modified = runlevel 3 is console login, runlevel 5 is
GUI login = if the default is changed to 3, change it to 5 and reboot;
as well, if you just want to start X, type: startx
