my chipset is the same as yours.
my model is mdp3858 with fax data voice n speakerphone.
there is no indication  anywhere in the manual that
it is a winmodem.
does being  microsoft pc98 and
windows 98 ready mean its a winmodem.

I know that Rockwell has several chipsets, they were very well known in
all kinds of modems for a while. Don't know about the modem that you
have. If is is a win-modem, you can pretty much forget about it...
