Using KDE here and kooka seems to work very well for me using OCR. Resolution
setting is important but I have scanned documents and been able to go to
revisions without having to do any corrections at all. HTH

Now that I've installed GOCR it works too.

 so,
After you have scanned the article in question
and in viewer XXX scanner window
there is a little tab ABC/DEF to click on,
and it then asks you for a directory and filename
then OK, and hey presto it creates a nice
 little file.txt for you.

The only previso is that it does have the character
recognition errors as happened to me on the GOCR CL.

If they could spruce up the performance of
the character recogniton it would be a real winner.

You don't need to be an expert, John. Just write what you did, how
well it works, what its limitations are etc. Many things on the
TWiki are just our experiences, but they can save hours for other
people. And if you or someone else learns more about it, it's very
easy to edit the entry. If you Regards

OK Anne,
I've done it perhaps you can edit the layout a bit.

Done it, John. I've changed the page layout, now we're getting more
entries on it. I've put in a Table of Contents, and made sure that
each entry is a header (---+++ marks level 3 header). I think it's
easier to read now. Take a look at the changes I made. On many
pages you could just copy the formatting of an existing entry - it's
unfortunate that this page didn't give you much help.

That is good Anne.

I just didn't find the editor a familiar thing to use.
Now the item scans better.

Use it with kooka on KDE if you want a gui for it.
Works very nicely in combination with sane
The only thing sort of unclear is that it creates it's own directory and sees
only that.
The folder is made in .kde/share/apps/ScanImages/ which isn't that obvious
IMHO.
So if you want to scan an image you've already got, you have to move it into
that folder.

Good luck,

Well I don't mind having one really, I don't mind at all, in fact I
would welcome it.
I have nothing against gui, but I don't like being dependent only on gui.

So, I load kooka,
it finds my scanner OK,
But after that I never could get the thing to either,
scan an image,
or ,
load an existing image.
and so therfore I have rather tended to neglect kooka in
favour of Xsane.
I wonder if Xsane works with OCR ?

OK, done that, but again my CL sane is near nothing.
I suppose I ought to remidy that.
I will have a try later.

Be sure to let kooka make an (empty or not) directory first (which goes in the
afore mentioned ../Scanimage/) and put the pics in thereotherwise it
still wont see them.

Good luck,

I agree, it would be so nice to gave GOCR to work with Xsane and/or gimp
as a pluggin.
I've got to look into that.
