Re: [newbie] PPP setup

1999-07-19 Thread drek

I ran into a bit of difficulty that had the same symptom. I found (guessed)
that VanJacobson compression will not work with my ISP. Put the "novj" line
without the quotes into the options file, or into the kppp setup and see if
that helps. It might.

anything else going on that could cause KPPP not to realize that the PPP
 connection was open?

In a word, authentication. Try shifting from chat script (where you
expect queries and supply login and password) to PAP . Many ISPs
do use PAP, including Prodigy.net and uswest.net, and some, like Pacific
Telecom can't handle it at all. Try all authentication protocols
available from your machine, then contact your ISP. Many ISPs will
tell you flatly that they don't support Linux, yet theri equipment runs
fine when you use it. Cases in point are prodigy.net and uswest.net,
the second now supporting linux after Ivolunteered to support linux
users until they had techs in place.

I am trying to configure my PPP setup under KDE.
I currently have the
modem working just fine, and when I put my connection into terminal
based
mode, my script runs through, and starts the ppp connection excellently,
but
when I click on "continue" KPPP sits with the box that says "logging
onto
network" until it gets a PPP timeout. I know that my ISP opens
the PPP
connection, but my computer just isn't finding it. Any ideas?

Nook Net also uses PAP authentication. But if try a chat type
of login, then it will never let you on.

Here is the difference:

Does NOT work:

Welcome to Nook Net, Nome, Alaska
login: rfg
password: peanut
Now hit control AQ, and it does not work because the server
took your typed answer to login: and led you to la-la land.

This WORKS:

Welcome to Nook Net, Nome, Alaska
login:
DO NOT reply to the login: prompt. Hit control AQ, then start
your pppd with PAP.

Now for the explanation. My server is a Livingston, used by a
vast majority of ISP's. I also use PAP. If you type an answer
to the login: prompt, either from the keyboard or from a chat
script, it will assume you have a shell account and bump you off
as I do not give users shell accounts.

How can you tell?

In Windows 95, if you use a terminal session or a script file,
then you probably need one in Linux.

If in Win95 all you do is fill in the CONNECT to box with
username and password, then you are not using a scripted or chat
login, just PAP. Make sure you do likewise for Linux. Check
out your /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file and make sure it looks okay,
then proceed without typing in your username to the login:
prompt.

Unfortunately, RedHat and Mandrake seem to make scripted logins
the default rather than the exception. This flies in the face
of MOST isp practices. You will have to rectify this yourself.
