Is this machine connected to the internet?  Does it
have a firewall installed and configured?  This sounds
more like a hack then a system error.  Please give us
more detailed information so we can try to figure this
out.

 I recently came home to discover that all my passwords are changed...

I installed Star Office and that happened to me.  I removed it, and my
passwords worked again.

I don't know why though.

I have a big problem... all my passwords are changed! including root! I tried 
booting into single user mode and doing a passwd and it said it updated all 
authentication tokens successfully but the pass did not change and I cannot 
login to my linux box... I don't think i was hacked please help me.

why don't you think that your system could have been hacked?

Is it possible to make the KDE loggin screen, echo the password as '*' 
when it's being typed?  Or it it s security feature to hide the amount 
of charactors?
