Hi Sharrea.

I had this same problem. I installed the full (Loki purchase) version of Q3
and got the same sound error you did. I had to downloand a point release from
the ID Software web site. This fixed it. To see if it is a problem with your
sound drivers, you can start the game with no sound, like this:

quake3 +set s_initsound 0

If it does run with no sound - then it is a sound driver issue.

For more info go to:

http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/

and here is where you can d/l the actual file you need:

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/

Beware, it is a 30+ meg file!

Hope this helps ya get back to fraggin'... :-)

Thanks Ron, much appreciated. I got the game running without sound using
your start command above. I checked out that website and I'm now
downloading the point release - hopefully that'll fix it.

Jeez playing Q3A without sound... can't hear the buggers coming!

Thanks again
Sharrea

No problem - thats what this list is for. That point release did fix my lack
of sound, it should work with yours as well.

Hehehehe, thats the way I felt - its just not the same! :-)

[newbie] Quake3A and SBLive! 5.1

2002-09-22 Thread Sharrea

Hardware:
CPU = AMD Athlon 1GHz
MB = Soltek SL-75KAV
RAM = 1024 MB
VIDEO = GeForce2 64MB GTS Pro
SOUND = SB Live! 5.1

A few months back I was dual booting with RedHat 7.3 and could play Quake
III Arena no problem there but trying to play it in Mandrake Cooker (up to
9.0) always resulted in this error message (following other
initializations) when starting the game from a terminal:

--- sound initialization ---

Received signal 11, exiting...

I've since removed RH and gone back to MDK 8.1 (couldn't keep up with
downloads of Cooker with slow internet connection) and I still get the same
error message. The README file states Please note that at the time of
this writing, PCI based sound cards such as the SoundBlaster Live and
Diamond Monster MX series were not supported. But I can't understand why
it worked in RH on the same hardware but not in MDK. It makes no
difference whether I try to start the game as root or user.

Is there anyone here with an SB Live! soundcard that can play Q3A in MDK?
If so, perhaps you may know what I'm doing wrong?

TIA
Sharrea
PS. Nvidia drivers are installed and 3D works fine (eg. Tuxracer). I only
have the demo version of Quake III Arena.
