Re: [newbie] RAID controller support in LM8?
The A7M266 uses DDR RAM and has the VIA chipset. It supports up to 2GB of RAM (the A7V supports 1.5GB, and the A7A 3GB, though I have never personally heard of a 1GB stick of RAM, but maybe they exist). I thought the A7M266 had an AMD northbridge and a VIA south bridge. Here are a couple of mentions of RAM modules that go up to 1GB: http://www.micron.com/products/category.jsp?path=/Modules/SDRAM http://images.micron.com/pdf/guide/modguide.pdf

There is a proprietary driver for RH 7.0 which won't work with anything else, but will use the RAID mode. The Promise drop-ins that are off-board controllers don't work without tweaking our system cause the install kernel sees them as hdg and hdh and the boot kernel sees them as hda and hdb for example... But that is also true of drop-in HPT and CMD controllers. And we are fixing that right now. Thanks! OK all drives should be usable on both boards. Not as RAID in linux, but at least usable. Much better than the MSI with its embedded Promise FastTrak which doesn't seem to like linux on any of its RAID drive channels. Both use the VIA 686B southbridge so be sure to get a BIOS update to the most recent. The difference as far as I can tell is that one (ABIT) has an extra pci slot, but not agp pro just 1/4x. While they both have AtA/100 support , the other (ASUS) provides this via a Promise controller. I'm not sure what this means. -Original Message- From: Paul Rodríguez [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2001 12:07 PM To: Paul Rodríguez; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [newbie] RAID controller support in LM8? BTW, thanks for all the help! It's been invaluable to me so far. If it's not too much trouble, could you take a look at this motherboard and tell me what you think? http://store.yahoo.com/thechipmerchant/3485-1.html The following is a similar one I found on www.linhardware.com , it's the A7M not the A7A above (not sure of the difference). http://lhd.zdnet.com/db/dispproduct.php3?DISP?2676 I provide the link because it has some more spec info that might be useful. Thanks! -Paul R P.S.scsi not so important to me anymore, but jumperless mobo is, also wanted to point out that it's for an Athlon 1.4ghz cpu. By default the Promise controller on the A7V is set to ATA100 support and this most likely what you want under Linux. 3) Cheaper Compare back to back http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Motherboard/socketa/a7a266/spec.html http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Motherboard/socketa/a7v133/spec.html People might argue that the A7A266 has slots for DDR RAM, but the benchmarks so far do not indicate that having DDR RAM gives a significant improvement in speed (yet). You can't use both DDR (PC2100) and PC133 simultaneously with the A7A266. The following is a similar one I found on www.linhardware.com , it's the A7M not the A7A above (not sure of the difference). http://lhd.zdnet.com/db/dispproduct.php3?DISP?2676 I provide the link because it has some more spec info that might be useful. http://www.asus.com.tw/products/Motherboard/socketa/a7m266/spec.html The A7M266 uses DDR RAM and has the VIA chipset. I have a 1.2GHz AMD running on the A7V133 and am very pleased with it, in particularly the feature/price ratio. The extra ATA100 controller is welcome when you have 2 CD-ROMS, a ZIP, and 3 IDE drives. But, people may have good arguments why you should pay $15-$25 more for the A7A266 (DDR RAM support maybe ...) [newbie] RAID controller support in LM8?
Hello all, I am thinking of purchasing the Abit KT7A motherboard with the integrated Highpoint RAID controller. However I can't find any RAID section in the supported hardware page on the site. Is it safe to assume that I won't have any problems running Mandrake 8 off a harddisk attached to the controller? Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. The highpoint RAID controller is a winRAID controller. It will control RAIDs in Windows only (software based, in ROM). However, with the RAID turned off, it works satisfactorily in linux. The benefit of using it in linux, as a standard controller, is that linux has a software RAID which is superior anyway to the firmware from CMD and Promise and HighPoint. For example, it does not need identical sized disks, and can assemble a RAID0 volume from pieces of several drives, with a similar performance boost. If you can get the same board without the RAID, just with standard IDE channels, that will work the same in Linux. The Highpoint can work either way, so you are free to choose. Civileme QA Team
