thank you but this is not what i actually mean.

you can always, of course, type ...
kedit <name_of_text_file>
or
ark <name_of_zip_file>
in the terminal
to open the files associated to kedit or ark in X.

what i was looking for is a command in the terminal that will
spawn kedit , ark, or any  program according to the file association
of the file to be opened.

we'll if there is really none (i hope there is :),
i guess i have open KDE/FileBrowsing/File Associations,
do copy & paste and create a program for this.
