[newbie] Shred??

Hello list.

Ok,so I know what 'move to trash' does and
'delete' obviously, but I have no clue what
'shred' is for, why it is needed, and who wrote it.

Sorry for so many questions at once.

It's a difference of increased security. That is, when you shred a file, not
only is it deleted from the directory listing, but the blocks that it
occupies on your hard drive are zeroed out so that the file is impossible to
recover by any means.
