Re: [newbie] Shutting down X
If you truly want X to stop loading or running automaticly then run X Configuration as root. Click OK and close. You will then see 2 more pop up windows, 1 asking if you wish to test the setting and the 2nd asking if you wish to start X at boot. Click No to the 2nd and X will no longer run. I mean that literally X will no longer run period You would have to run X Configuration again in order to start it. The directions I gave were done from kde. I have done it that way but I have not tied it from the command line but it should work from there more or less the same. Re: [newbie] Shutting down X
The easiest way is to press "Ctrl+Alt+Fx" where x is 1-6. The Mandrake doesn't have the option to run in console mode when you wish it by pressing SHUTDOWN from the login, whereas other (Caldera for example) do. I don't know if there is a way to enable this option somehow. If anyone knows, please post it out... Do you need to be in command line or will a terminal window do ? If you need to be in command line I think it's init 3 On Sun, 04 Jun 2000, you wrote: I have a dumb questionI need to run in command line mode and can't seem to get there. Can anyone tell me how to shut down X and get to the command line? init 3 is almost right. At the lilo prompt you can type linux 3 that will get you to a text mode console without going into X. From inside X, you can do ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a console, and alt-f7 to go back to X. Inside X you can also ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the x-server and fall back to a console. Re: [newbie] Shutting down X
In KDE right click on the desktop and pick "Log out" from the menu. In anything you like Ctrl - Alt - Backspace pressed simultaenously should get you there, but there must be a menu option somewhere HTH Glyn M. Re: [newbie] Shutting down X
Jimif you booted into the console and then started the desktop gui with a startx command then all you need to do is logout of the gui. In KDE there is an X button just above a padlock button on the panel at the bottom of your screen. Click on this X button and follow the dialog boxes. If you booted directly into the gui desktop then you don't shut down the gui to get to the command line. There are 2 ways to get to a command line. Both of them will work in the above situation (started the gui w/startx) as well. First one is to open a console window. There is an icon on the panel for that. Second is to use the ctl-alt-fX (where X=2,3,4,5,or 6). To get back to the gui from one of these consoles you press alt-f7. Re: [newbie] Shutting down X
you can switch to a virtual terminal by pressing CTRL+AL+F1 ( could be between F1-F8 ) normally all you have to do is press ALT+F1 but when you are in X you have to press CTRL+ALT+F1 At 11:12 AM 6/4/00 -0400, you wrote: I have a dumb questionI need to run in command line mode and can't seem to get there.
