[newbie] Software raid install

2002-01-15 Thread Daniel Olynsma (ENZ)
Title: Software raid install

I have just got a new 40 gig drive and would like to use it with my current 20 gig drive in a software raid0 configuration.

Does the installer support setting up software raids during the install, or do I have to set up the raid after installing mandrake to space on the end of the 40 gig drive.

Thanks for any help.

Daniel

first of all I apologise to people who have received this document several

There is a good raid HOWTO on the Internet.
one comment I have, is that normally raid drives should be of same or similar
size.

Daniel,

Thanks for trying, but this is still in HTML. It is, however, quite
readable. Which email client do you use -- maybe I or somebody else can
help you figure out how to turn off HTML. It can be confusing (and a
PITA).

But, we should try to help you with your main problem. Unfortunately, I
can't remember, even though I've recently been doing some installs of
Mandrake 8.1. It probably is supported.

I've also had occasion to attempt a RedHat 7.2 installation recently.
Setting up a raid system there is supported and very straightforward
during the install. (I'm afraid to say anything about it, because
anything I'm liable to say will probably be more confusing than if you
simply attempt it. IIRC, it's a two step process, you do something like
setup several partitions as raid partitions and then combine them, or
perhaps I have it backward, maybe you say you plan to have a raid
system, then designate which partitions will be part of the raid
system.)

Hopefully someone else can answer your question with respect to
Mandrake.

Give it a whirl during install--just set up your raids using diskdrake

[newbie] Software RAID setup question

2001-01-15 Thread Steve Gulick

Please have patients with me as I have never used
RAID before. I have an existing partitioned drive with corp server 1.0 installed
on it and I want to set up RAID mirroring on another drive that is exactly the
same make and model as the source drive. Do I have to partition both drives the
same or does theRAID do that? Can I set up RAID without repartioning
the source drive? or will it hurt any data on the existing source
drive?

TIA Steve
