Try using mouseconfig or mousedrake.
I have a USB trackball mouse with a Mouse whell and 4 buttons and it works
just fine. (Well I would like it to work differently, but it does the
job and works well for how it's currently configured.)
You could also use HardDrake to configure the mouse as well. Just be a lot
of tabbing through to get to what you need. But it's do-able.
