astraight answer please
well, i run linux because winblows is for sheep. if you don't understand
your computer and just want to do things (and most home users are of that
nature) then use windows. it is perfect for that (i mean that seriously,
not being sarcastic like the first sentance). but i understand computers
somewhat, and i enjoy playing with them, and i love spending 4 hours trying
to fix something getting it to work and learning something in the process.
i have spent easily 10 hours or more at my computer without eating or taking
a break to fix things experiment. i get a rush out of that stuff. thus i
use linux. but i am not normal. normal people don't enjoy 10 hours of
frustrating agoney. =)
which is not to say that linux is in my opinion frustrating. i
installed 7.0 knowing nothing about linux, and it worked great. i was able
to start doing things right off the bat. someone on this list once said
that linux is like an adventure game. i have found that to be true. if you
just want to do things, install it, use KDE and you are home. =) i bet you
will go months without any problem. but if you want to explore and try new
things, linux is deep and configurable and amazing that you will never run
out of challenges.
as to running on lesser machines you simply have to get a distro made for
the machine you want to put it on, or build your own kernal. i have a 486 i
would like to put linux on one day.
is linux "lighter" using Xwindows? well i think it depends on the
window manager you use. i find KDE is slow, but effective intuitive. i
use KDE as root. as user i run Enlightenment as i like the eye candy, so i
don't think it's the fastest around. other WMs are probably much faster.
and besides, you can do so much from the command line (burn a CD, play a
sound file, file management) depending on what you are doing you may not
need Xwindows.
all this rambling is just my opinion,
but you asked=)
have a good one.

ok, here is the real question: why do people try running linux?, the
impression i had gathered was that it was a lighter os and could be used on
older machines, (i386 etc). I was a little dismayed when i saw the download
size. How much disk space will a bare install need?

Define "faster than windows". Using KDE I've noticed there is quite
often a noticable delay waiting for windows to appear - far longer than
in windows.

Hi,
Yes, you can and it will run faster then windows,
but you forgot to mention the amount of ram?
Linux likes it's ram, the more the better.

Dear all,
Can i install mandrake on my (shame) p200mmx 3.3gig machine?
will it run apps faster than windoze bloatware?
