Re: [newbie] error msg--xauth: /home/buck/.Xauthority not writable changes will be ignored

2000-06-06 Thread buck h

Paul,
I tried out your suggestion and unfortunately chown didnt work..i also tried
to chmod a+rwx the file and that didnt seem to solve the problem either.
However, i did find out from your suggestion that the ownership was changed
from buck.buck to root.root .. i decided to try and delete all the
.Xauthority files in my home directory after backing them up of course (the
three files being: .Xauthority, .Xauthority-c, and .Xauthority-l) this seems
to have worked!! when i typed startx after I did that a new .Xauthority file
was written :D !! ! and i didnt get an error message WOO HOO!!! im stoked!!
i also figured out what was causing the error which may be helpful to some
of the other newbies out there that are getting the same thing... while i
was using X as a different user entirely i logged out back to console mode
.. then i switched to the superuser mode with the su command and typed
startx and went into an X window session when I logged out of that and
exited the su shell, the file ownership had changed to root and i began to
get the same error again.. what ill have to do now when i want to log into
and X session as root would be to switch virtual consoles and log in that
way ..at least i hope so ..

hopefully all this info helps someone out there .. i wish i'd known this
before hehehe.. thanks again paul ..

This sounds a lot like the problem Bambi and others had with .kderc.

Check if the owner of .Xauthority is indeed "buck.buck". If that is not so
(then it probably is root), log in as root, and change things with

chown buck.buck .Xauthority

Let me know if that helped, ok?

Paul

i have checked the archives and just about every other source of info i
could think of but i just cant seem to find the answer...i am new to this
mailing list too by the way :).. any help would be much appreciated ..
 thanks!!

problem: i just installed mandrake 7.0 (again) .. after i logged in for
the
first time (as a user), i typed startx to enter X window system with Kwm
and
KDE..everything seemed fine at the time and i setup my KPPP, changed the
background, setup Netscape, etc. nothing big, then i exited... when i
typed
startx again however, i recieved the following error message--- auth:
/home/buck/.Xauthority not writable changes will be ignored then it
contined
to go back into X .. when i logged out the second time and tried startx
again i recieved a different error message--- xauth: time out in locking
 authority file /home/buck/.Xauthority

i have never had this type of problem with any other distro but im sure
it
is easily remedied .. well, im hoping heheh

 thank you very much :)

Delete the .Xauthority file and then startx again, the file will be
recreated.
