( your first HD ) Unless something has changed with XP, which I wouldn't know as I've never used anything newer than 98, this is not quite correct. Windows only needs to believe that it is on the primary master. I still have 98 on a primary slave drive (it's in a caddy and not been in the machine in months as since Mandrake 8.2 I have been Windows free) Windows does need to be installed as Primary Master, you can then change the jumpers and move it to slave and Grub (probably Lilo as well but again I don't know as I am a Grub afficionado) can take care of swapping IDE channels to make Windows believe it is on Primary Master when it is in fact somewhere else. see info Grub for full details if you are interested Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? ( your first HD ) then, you install Linux on the second drive. it's quite simple, as you have two HD's almost no partitioning is needed. when the linux installer starts ang gets you into te partition manager phase, simply make sure you make a swap partition of about twice the size of your RAM and the rest leave it for linux ( ext2 or ext3 filesystem ). if you were using this drive as a backup drive for windows, you may have to delete existing partitions on that HD before this. oh, and Lilo can install itself on your Master Boot Record. that means when you start your computer the first thing you will see is the BIOS initializing, and then LILO will come up asking which system you want to boot. no diskettes needed. RE: [newbie] how can i have Windows beside Mandrake ..
It is actually quite simple. First, install windows (It does matter which windows you are using… the steps for 2000 are a little different) note: Windows MUST be on the PRIMARY MASTER drive! Then make a boot disk for that version of windows you installed. DO NOT skip this step! Next, install mandrake, but during the install, when you get to the “partition assignment” stage, there will be a partition listed as FAT32 or NTFS. Give that a mount point of /mnt/windows or whatever you choose. Then once the files are all installed, you reach the “Boot configuration” stage. You will be given the option of using grub or lilo… I recommend lilo because of it’s simplicity. Then when you have to configure lilo, make sure that you have created a label called “dos” or “windows” and point it to the partition where windows is installed. I think that if windows is already installed, mandrake will automatically configure this for you, but double check anyhow. Then when asked make sure you create a mandrake boot disk as well!! This step should NEVER be skipped in a dual boot environment, because if windows ever overwrites the boot sector, you wont be able to access your linux partition without a lot of unneeded effort! Once all this is complete, and after the installation of mandrake is complete, everything should be ok. In theory, if everything goes well the boot disks you made shouldn’t ever be needed, but have them just in case everything goes to hell. Also a good reference for this information is the mandrake installation guide (found on http://www.linux-mandrake.com) or you can always check out the howto’s. I have provided a link to the howto pertaining to dual booting windows/linux here à http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+Win95/index.html I hope this helps a little! I'm pretty sure you have to have windows as the primary and mandrake as the slave. I could be wrong though.
