You might want to try looking for material on 'bootp', I seem to remember 
that was the first incarnation of dhcp on Linux...

okay, for the next part in this saga with my getting a webserver online...

1. how could i setup a ip address on the 486, using
the slackware disks (bare.i color.z network.dsk),
and without rebooting the machine?!

2. or... what is the slackware equal to dhcpcd cmd in mandrake to have the 
machine talk to my dhcp server?

3. is there another disk i could use... that would have dhcp client utils on 
it?
