If you print from a KDE application you will notice there is already a pseudo
printer ready configured to create pdf documents.
This pdf printer does nothing more than call up ps2pdf which will create a
pdf file from a Postscript one.

The ps2pdf application in turn uses ghostscript to create the pdf files.

Hint:-

In many cases the PDF files produced by ps2pdf/Ghostscript are fine, but for
some demanding applications like printing complex speadsheets out of StarCalc
the output produced is rather 'crummy' (StarCalc columns wander all over the
place)

The solution is to visit http://www.ghostscript.com/ and replace your
ghostscript6.51 with the AFPL-ghostscript7.03

The AFPL ghostscipt is non GPL hence its non inclusion in Mandrake, but is
free (as in beer). So far it has handled everything I have thrown at it
perfectly.

Also on the site is GSView4.1 which displays pdf files a little more
accurately than gv, but with not quite such a nice user interface.

Most apps can print to a postscript file. Do this and run ps2pdf to
make a PDF version of it.

Be careful about fonts though, or you may end up with a PDF file that
looks fine viewed in, say, ghostview but is ugly (or even blank) in
Acrobat/Windows (well, they've been doing it to us long enough ...).
Any of the adobe font family should give you good clean results.

A good way to find out command-line tricks is using the tab key.
Type the format you want to convert from, hit tab, and you'll get a
list of likely converters; e.g., ps - tab will get you ps2pdf,
ps2ascii, ps2png andso on. If you have the pstricks package
installed, you can find some fun stuff here.

BTW, you can specify the compatibility level of the PDF file. If
you're sure your readers have Adobe Acrobat 4+ or the equivalent,
you can use ps2pdf13, though I've never bothered with it.

Yup. Scribus is a DTP app still in early beta but getting on nicely. It
exports its files straight into pdf.

Kword will save to pdf, but you do it via the print menu - just select the
pdf printer and go. Same goes for Abiword.
