i am trying to install csound from sources. there is an autoconf
./configure script that i need to run before i can make it. it checks
for various things right away. one of the things it checks for is gcc,
which it finds. then it somehow tests it to see if it works, and it
comes back with a no. then it says my c compiler cannot compile.
i was also trying to install rosegarden from source. it has a make
file. i edited the makefile with proper paths then did make. it
crashed out after a few lines with an error looking for 'makedepend'. i
am not a gcc guru, so i am not sure if i have everything installed and
configured right for it to work. i used to run slackware and gcc worked
right away then. seems like this one should too.
more info: i am running mandrake 6.0 that i burned from an iso image
that i d/l from mandrake software. i have also installed the system
updates from the web site. i have many packages for development
installed - perhaps i should send you a list?

sounds like glibc-devel isn't installed.

there should be a "config.log" check that and it will tell you precisely
why it failed.

Can you be specific with some of the error messages you are getting when
you try to compile? This would give us a better idea of what may be
missing.
