[newbie] two monitors; experience with wine?; Database programs?

1999-12-29 Thread Hannes Lackner

Hi,

At win98 it is possible to install two graphiccards and monitors,
so if you move your mouse to the edge of the monitor you can
switch between them.
This is very fine because I can have the main Window on my 19"
monitor and the toolpalettes on the 15" one .

Is this possible with Linux too?

Does anyone have some experience with the windows modulator
"wine?". Ore other emulators better?
How much does emulating windows affect the speed?
I am using the Vectorworks 2d-3d drawing and rendering program
from Diehlgraphsoft and would like to run it at Linux.
My hardware: CPU: Celeron 400 mhz, overclocked to 500 mhz
Graficards: Matrox Millenium II (PCI) 8Mb
ATI Rage II (AGP) 8Mb
  RAM: 128 Mb

Can someone tell me a really good Database program for Linux?
The one which is included at the Staroffice isn't the best
I need to be able to make sophisticated calculations.

Thanks in Advance and a happy, y2k- conforming New Year's Eve ;-)

Hannes

From the reviews I've read Vmware is much better than Wine, but you
have to pay $99 after the trial period. It'll only run for 30 days
without being unlocked.

 Hi, Hannes,

I've seen photos on the Web of people with dual monitor Linux systems.
 Try this link for starters
 http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/LDP/LG/issue17/answer.html#vidX.
Good
 luck,

If your serious about windows emulation try Vmware. I've played with
the demo and it was very very impressive. As for performance issues you'll
just have to try it and see. But, with VMware what you would really be
doing is running windows in a bomb proof box. I think what your trying for
is to grab the minimum of windows files and get the program up under Wine.
For that all you can do is look up the wine homepage and the how-to. I
don't know of any texts on wine currently, but if anyone does PLEASE let me
know. Sorry.

I like the analogy Jason,

Computers are kind of like your car, it's a contained explosion when it
goes wrong it goes real wrong, but when it works right WOW. ;-)

Anyway as for a database we do some work with the people at pick systems
(I'm pretty sure, as in don't quote me i'm just a hacker)
