thank you for the tips. i tried it and still don't have audio (of any flavor
(cd, mp3, etc)).
this is what my /etc/modules.conf looks like:

alias net-pf-4 ipx
alias usb-interface usb-ohci
alias eth0 8139too
alias sound-slot-0 via82cxxx_audio
alias char-major-81 bttv
alias usb-interface1 usb-uhci
alias usb-interface2 usb-uhci
alias usb-interface3 usb-uhci
alias tvcard0 bttv

you'll notice that i set it back to the original configuration. i had set it
to your suggestions and rebooted (can you tell i an a newbie :^( )

by the way, all i get is static on my tv card. it works fine on my copy of
monopolistic,_you_will_be_assimilated,_you_will_go_today,
_crashdoze_O.S.

my system:
the mobo is an msi k7t266 pro2-ru (ms-6380 v2.x) with a via vt8366a (522bga)
and a via vt8233 (376 bga) chipsets
amd athlon xp 1700+

64 mb nvidia gforce 2 w/ tv out
40 gb seagate h.d.

8x cd (don't need any faster for music (or i'm cheap :^))

Go to /etc/modules.conf with a text editor and add:-

 # ALSA native device support
 alias char-major-116 snd
 alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via8233

If there is anythy other sound chip support, hash (#) it out.

Then go to Mandrake control center and make sure you have aRts enabled,
if you want multi chanel sound configuration.

Then go to the sound mixer app in kstart menu and make sure all the led's
are bright green ( not midgreen which is the default, and rather
 confusing).

Good quality sound is then enabled.
The via 8233 sound chip is OK and once the above is enabled it works
 flawlessly

I think this is a suggestion, you are supposed to amend it
but # it out
and I still think the following is correct.
# ALSA native device support
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via8233

via 8233 is the sound chip and it comes with AC 97 audiocodec

did you check this

well I still think vis8233 is your sound chip.
I have a msi mobo like you, not quite the same , but very similar.
The sound works perfectly on alsa sound driver , arts enabled ,mixer
leds are bright green ( oh , and by the way having set the leds to
bright green, did you move your cursor over the window header and right
mouse click down to
store settings) Nothing else is necessary for me. All devices work
flawlessly,
I have multichannel support , all sound stream types work, all system
sound works. All DVD devices sound work, I have them all, grip works,
even xcdroast
play sound works. Maybe something doesn't but I haven't found one yet.
I cannot see what difference there is between our two setups
I have msi k7t266pro2 with raid.
my onboard sound chip is via 8233
you haven't mentioned having AC97 codec , but I bet you do have it ?

Actually, an 8X CD is nicer in many ways that the bigger numbers. For
occasionally accessing data on CD it is _faster_ than a 52X because
almost all 8Xs never spin down, and the 52s must or tear the media and
themselves apart. An 8X is also quieter running.

The 8233 requires special procedures. Here is the web site.

I don't know what your TV card is but the chipset on your Mobo has a
broken clock which can cause a host of problems with a real multitasking OS.

 Civileme,
do you know what is the status of the work-around attempts for the
clock bug in the newer versions of the kernel? Since I have this
particular VIA chipset (like a large number of other mandrake users),
I'm very interested in hearing any news about any progress or lack
 thereof...

 Thanks,

 Narfi.

Wish I did have that info--it is on the ALi Magic Chipsets as well as
the KT266A. I believe the expert archives do have a workarouns for the
BT848, but filesystem corruption is another symptom and these boards are
currently useless for some journaling filesystems... but seem to work OK
 with ext2.

 Civileme

Can you please elaborate a little bit? ... you said something
interesting that I haven't heard before...
I know that filesystem corruption can occur if one overloads the PCI bus
[because of the timer bug], and that one way to overload the PCI bus is
with a TV card. However, I haven't heard anything about different
behaviour of different filesystems w.r.t. corruption.
In particular, I switched to ext3 myself since I was willing to trade
speed for some security against crashes. Was I misled in my thinking
there? Have you perhaps run experiments with these chipsets in your lab?

Narfi.
ps. I've been trying to follow the discussions on the lkml about the
clock bug, it pops up sporadically, there are patches floating around,
but I haven't seen any concrete data about their effectiveness. I'm
still hoping the situation will improve before 9.0, but I'm not holding
my breath :-)

Well, I don't know what your problem is... no sound at all? What
Mandrake version are you running? I've used an integrated AC97 sound
chip (Soyo) with Mdk8.0 thru 8.3. It's always been setup and
functioning after an install of the OS. MSI's are good boards, you
should have the same results. The AC97 is sort'a particular about
which sound server (OSS, aRts, ALSA) it uses with various apps tho.
You should specify which MSI mobo you've got. Maybe someone with the
same board can help.

FWIW, here's my relevant parts lspci, lsmod, and modules.conf
 tom$ lspcidrake

unknown : VIA Technologies|VT82C686 [Apollo Super ACPI]
