I have the exact same UPS, and it worked fine here right out of the box (once
I tweaked the config file for apcupsd, of course).  You selected the correct
USB cable and commented out the "DEVICE" setting in order for the program to
probe the USB ports to find the UPS, right?  I know the comments in the
configuration file say to specify the USB port, but the user's manual for the
program says "If you have a USB device, it is better not to specify a device
directive by commenting it out.  APCUPSD will automatically search for your
device in the standard places."  I forget where I got the PDF user manual.
I'd be glad to email it to you, if you like.

Just FYI, my settings here are:

UPSCABLE usb
UPSTYPE usb
#DEVICE
UPSCLASS standalone
