Typing /sbin/ifup ppp0 into /etc/bashrc worked for me.  

However, to be honest I found it to be awkward and have deleted the command
from the file.  Whenever I had to su to root it would try and connect all over
again and cause the terminal to stall for a minute or so whilst it shut down the
initial connection and redialled again.  A pain when the task you su to do
would have only taken few seconds.
