anyone got any place i can look for how to enable a NIC on an SNF box
  NOT on a network atm?

errr, plug in a monitor and log in?

Tried that. Did fine. I want to login ON the network tho. That failed
for some odd reason. Maybe i need to reboot the network?
Cause the LAN didn't pick it up as far as I could tell. was weird. I'll
give it another shot.

Thx shane, as always you're so (un)helpful :)

Femme, I have noticed a problem in 8.2 that I can not login to the SNF machine if the computer I am using is set up to
run dhcp. Change to static and I can log on to the SNF but not onto the internet. This appears to have been solved in 9.0beta4, not sure, but try using Mandrake Control CenterNetworkconnection and changing to static on the machine your using. Hope this makes sense to you. Dennis M.

Anyway, NICB isn't functioning. No lights on the back nothing. Yet I
  believe its detected.

if you have no lights at all, you likely have a dead card. anyway all the
nics i have ever used light up at power on reguardless of the OS or
detection, though some will turn off if not detected. you might want to
 watch it at bootup.

As an aside, is there an easy way to tell which is NIC-A and which is
  -B?

the second card will be in the later slot. ie, if you have 2 PCI cards the
one in the first slot will be the first card. the documentation or even
 the motherboard itself might tell you slots A B C or 1 2 3.

I had a similar problem, just bite the bullet and replace the NIC and likely
all will work.HTH

My dilemma is that the NIC thats supposed to hook up to the DSL Modem
isn't working. Rather, it works I believe, but SNF isn't configuring
it.
so my network currently is thus:
CompA Switch
CompB ---^ ^
DSL Modem --|
I assume (perhaps wrongly) the firewall will need to have ONE NIC
accessing that modem directly no?

Femme,

your understanding of this is correct. This is exactly how my network is
setup. In fact, I was experiencing the same trouble. I finally summized
that the second nic just wasn't any good and changed it out. When I did
that it began to connect via the cable modem and my network lived!

Have you tried that yet?

Mark

Not yet. First thing I did was hook one NIC to the Switch. Why? Cause I
just wanted to SSH into it or something. See if I can just play with
it. I'm on a LAN here, and my g/f would kill me if she has no Internet
connection. *Shrugs* So.. I must play with the box first, figure
out how it works. I don't know if this is even possible yet. The second
card, if it IS defective I shall pitch *Like i did a P/S this last 2 weeks*.
