Before you buy RAM, make sure you know how much RAM each slot can use.
I have some motherboards that can only use 128 MBytes (64 MByte in each
of two SDRAM(? - the 168 pin stuff) slots).

Other than that, I don't think there is a real limit -- you may reach
a point of diminishing returns. I.e., I usually find that adding more
RAM is more useful than getting a faster processor. This has been the
case for me in upgrading anything below 128 MBytes to 128 MBytes. I
believe that this would continue to be the case upto 256 MBytes and
maybe further. (Partially it depends on what you run on the computer.)
I would try to add RAM until swap was never used. (In other words, add
RAM, run it for a few weeks, and see when / if swap is used (by running
top).)

Somewhere between 768MB and 1024MB (IIRC), there is a point where you
must start using what Mandrake calls the enterprise kernel to make
full use of your RAM. I've never done this, and don't know where the
enterprise kernel can be found but I understand it is readily
accessible.

Hope this helps,
Randy Kramer

Sorry, the Promide is not a hardware RAID card. Calling it firmware is more
apropos, but even so there is no support for it as a RAID in linux, nor is it
necessary. Linux software RAID runs better and you can use non-identical
disks without penalty and you can also configure RAID0 RAID1 RAID4 and RAID5.

The 150 is fine for a fileserver, but use kernel 2.2 as the volume manager in
2.4 would put a heavy burden on it unless you are past kernel 2.4.10.

Mandrake provides four journaling filesystems Reiser has the best overall
performance unless you will be using NFS with it. XFS is also very good, and
JFS might be a good choice once it is thoroughly debugged. ext3 is slow and
slow and slower but reliable, and is a good choice for something like a
webserver where the speed is less important and the added bonus of ext2
compatibility (instant in-place conversion is possible).

Dear Andrew,

Be cautious regarding the limitations of the motherboard. There is the
possibility the board will only take 128MB ram for instance or the BIOS on
the board will limit the allowable size of the hard drive. Look on the
internet for information and specifications for that particular model of
motherboard.

I run an Apache machine that hosts many virtual sites using only the
software that was packaged with Mandrake-Linux 8.1 (Free downloaded iso
files). I do this on a machine which has 96MB ram (72 pin simms) a few
small hard drives and a Pentium 200.

The fun part is the machine is *not* housed in a case. As you may know you
can run a computer with all the components scattered about on a table... My
web server is suspended from the ceiling as a breeze catching mobile !
Dangling and clanking... :-)

Many Pentium's could not cache over 64 (and or 128 megs) of RAM without
the addition of cache ram chips or strips.
