Re: [newbie] Linux and windows98
Many replies to this. Thanks. Will Partition Magic 3.0 work with on an 11 Gb win98 partition? It's the version I have easiest access to. -Tom Garrett Williams wrote: Partition Magic will make short work of that process... RE: [newbie] Linux and windows98
Back up what is already on the partition, split the partition up, restore the windows stuff back on the partition you set up for it. Some people swear by Partition Magic, it allegedly can resize your partitions non-destructively. You may want to look into it. I know a limited version of it came with either McMillan's or the official Mandrake distribution. Caveat: Make sure the version of Partition Magic you use is as current as you can get. And do the back up before you do any re-partition just for insurance. I used an earlier version on a 13 gig hard drive and it choked, something about DOS or the BIOS not being able to handle a drive over 8 gig or something. To say the least, everything on the drive was trashed. The backup saved the day. Mandrake now also has a partition tool, I'm sorry, I forget the name.. But it sees all my partitions and seems feasible.. Maybe someone can jog my tired memory.. Re: [newbie] Linux and windows98
There are any number of utils to partition a hard drive non-destructively. The ONLY one I have ever had any experience with is Partition Magic, a commercial util that comes bundled with Mandrake and (I've heard/read) with Caldera Open Linux. I've heard of one that is in the /dos_utils directory of most Linux CDs, unfortunately, I don't know the name and have no experience using it. If you're going to BUY a distribution (not necessary, but a LOT faster than downloading everything you need G) you might as well use the utils that come with the operating system! :-) John - Original Message - From: Tom Brett [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 1999 7:51 PM Subject: [newbie] Linux and windows98 Hello: I just bought a Compaq PC with a 13 Gb hard drive and pre-installed win98. As will FIPS, from what I've heard.never used it, but that's what is distributed with RedHat. :-) It's in the "dosutils" subdirectory off the CD.
