Re: [newbie] really basic questions
howdy. if you have used unix for anything then you alread know 300% more than i knew when i first tried linux. remember, if you aren't root, you can't really mess up anything too much (and even if you do you can reinstall which i think installing linux is much easier than windows anyhow and i know many will disagree with me on that) but anyhowz just get on it and play. =) i'm getting pretty good with this os, and i discover new things all the time. it's fun, it's loaded with variety, it can do amazing things, and it's actually more intuitive than most people seem to think. case in point, other day i'm sitting there at an Eterm window in a directory with a wave file and i was thinking "surely linux has a way to play a wav file from a command prompt" so i just guess and typed "play music.wav" and hey, it started playing. now how hard is that? =) as has been said, there are loads of documentation right there on your machine, and don't forget to go to the library and look for linux books. as to concentrating your learning curve... i guess it all depends on what you want to do. i usually start by using a GUI program (example X CD Roast) to get something done, but then i'm also playing with the cdrecord command here and there because eventually i want to be able to do things from the command line if i want. if you system is working fine, don't worry about tuning it yet. reward yourself by playing with it having fun. the tweaking will come naturally. Me too. It's amazing how much we've learned over the last few months. - Roman Registered Linux User #179293 Abraham E Mandac Jr wrote: Sounds like me 2 months ago. --Abe At 03:49 PM 12/28/00 -0800, you wrote: sounds normal to me ;-) Original Message --- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2000 18:31:42 -0500 Hi all, i have a really basic question or two to ask the group. 1. i've loaded l-m7.2 into my pc, and it looks real cool but as yet i dont have a clue what to do with it next. i think i'm suffering from hyperwinism (windoz induced inferiority complex). 2.where do i need to begin concentrating my slow learning curve to start making this work? my experience is all operator/user and some of these unix commands are familiar from my work experience, but most of that is task related. i've read a few howto's and still in the l-m installation and user guide. i've made an icon or two in kde (but the programs didnt work yet). i'm kinda overwhelmed... is this normal? or am i ungeekable? les in gastonia nc Jesus saves, Allah forgives, Chuthulu thinks you'd make a nice sandwich. -

I'm sure we're all "geekable" to some extent. Maybe just not worthy of a pocket protector and tape on the eyeglasses. :) -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 28, 2000 6:32 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] really basic questions Hi all, i have a really basic question or two to ask the group. 1. i've loaded l-m7.2 into my pc, and it looks real cool but as yet i dont have a clue what to do with it next. i think i'm suffering from hyperwinism (windoz induced inferiority complex). 2.where do i need to begin concentrating my slow learning curve to start making this work? my experience is all operator/user and some of these unix commands are familiar from my work experience, but most of that is task related. i've read a few howto's and still in the l-m installation and user guide. i've made an icon or two in kde (but the programs didnt work yet). i'm kinda overwhelmed... is this normal? or am i ungeekable? les in gastonia nc

It's impossible to soak in everything at one time. Not only do you have a very solid operating system but a lot of new applications. However, you will need to invest some time reading. I would recommend getting yourself a couple of good books on Linux. The books will show the file and command structure of the operating system. Plus, if you get stuck, just post a question on this newsgroup.
