This questions still isn't answered... you guys are talking about
XP/SP2 and the original question was about W2K :-)

As far as I know, Windows-update operates through your browser, so as
long as you can browse the web and don't have any problems with that,
you can still download all the updates from Windows update.

WinXP is a whole different issue, esp with SP2. Before updating your
system from XP/SP1 to XP/SP2, please read the known issues on the
Microsoft.com webpages. This includes a list of known programs that
won't work anymore after the update.
It also has a tutorial on the new Firewall settings that come with
SP2. My advise when you upgrade: disable those features (or should I
call them bugs?!) and use a freeware firewall, a linux box or a
hardware firewall to operate as your main security.

Greetz,
Jan

What a wild statement, if a Windows Security Specialist knows whats he

No. - I tried just that (WinXP) with ZoneAlarm active on my
daughters PC. After downloading SP2 from Microsoft her box was
severely compromized once again.

I notice that if a WXP is pathced using SP2, it can't be pinged from network.
Well, so much for the effort :)
