Glad to help.
Well, here's the info that I think will help you help me:

I have a Diamond Stealth 2500 video card with 1MB ram, which has the
Alliance AT24 chipset.Monitor is AOC 4v. Motherboard is Biostar 8500TTD,
with a AMD K6 200 Mhz, 98MB ram. Also have the sound blaster card (which I
think is working, audio CDs play at least ) and an ISA bus serial Modem. I'm
able to use PPP with linux so that seems fine...

Hmm..never heard of that video card chipset or that
motherboard. Doesn't mean anything. Anyway, I'm pretty much
useless at this point. I hope someone else will be able to
help. :-)

Hey thanks for the speedy response regarding my video problems!

Well, here's the info that I think will help you help me:

Now, i've been playing with the Xconfigurator utility, which does wierd
things. It lists both my monitor and my vid card, and when I let it probe,
it defaults to the resolution of 8bpp. So I've tried to opt for not probing,
but then It askes me to choose my chip set, which is sudden no longer in the
list. So I use the recommended options, select 16bpp and restart X. I've
also tried running Xconfigurator and letting it do its thing, and then just
set Depth 16 in the XF86Config file. Eitherway, the system crashes within 3
minutes when I use 16bpp, but seems stable (more or less ) under 8bpp.

So that's the jist of it. basically I'd like to use 16bit color depth,
especially for internet browsing.

Appreciate your help.
-Bill

Bill:
We need more information about your system before we can help. Please give
us DETAILS about the motherboard mfr, vide card, what other devices you
have, etc.
Maybe we can help then...

Wondering if any one might offer a suggestion has to how I can get linux
to
work on my machine. Just had a relatively easy install using Mandrake
6.5,
but my computer hangs about a minute after booting. I get the KDE or
GNOME
or XFREE to boot, and as I begin to look around, freeze. Every time. Only
thing that doesn't crash is selecting the Failsafe option when loggin in.
But the GUI's would be preferable.

  Anyway, thanks in advance!
