Try replacing "make bzImage" for "make zImage".

I had a similar problem and the above worked for me.

I don't think that should be a problem.  From my experience, the partition 
containing the /boot directory must reside below the 1024th cylinder.

MandrakeUpdate started to work for me again  I would swear that
the mirror sites did not have the update directory/link for several
days.
