Some time ago we have realised that this kind of errors usually comes from
some timing-problems, usually on older machines, and we managed to
actually FIX this (we hope!) in 7.1 beta.

PS: you can still install 7.0 in text-install mode.

Did you configure a LAN???

X windows REQUIRES some sort of Networking setup, even if it is a
"loopback".

If you did not enable LAN support, X will never come up.
