[Newbie]Help on X Security Extensions.

2002-05-29 Thread Hema Seetharamaiah

Hello,

I need some help on understanding "X Security Extensions". From what I
understand, this is a specification ( X11R6...) to enhance X server
security.

This seems to be made up of X server having the -sp option, presence of
xauth, xhost etc commands, authorization through MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1(?)..

Is having X Security properly enabled for a desktop a configuration
issue?

Or, are there specific APIs (libXext ?) that an application can use to
take advantage of this X Security extension?

I am looking at GNOME apps in terms of security and am trying to
understand how the underlying X Security support impacts a GNOME
application and what are the ways to 'enable' it for an app (
configuration, coding ).

Regards,
Hema.

I think I have figured it out.

Please read my

I just recently purchased a Presario

My problem is when I load Xwindows
the display has some issues

The only way I can explain it is
that somehow my computer did not completely render the display.

Remember the old interlaced gif that
would render a little bit at a time, that is what the graphics and text look

make out parts of what the text says but very hard to read. Parts of the actual
window look fine especially where there is solid colors like the background.

I tried different combinations of
Generic Laptop Display Panels but to no avail. I also tried different
resolutions 640*480, 800*600, 1024*768. Can anyone help?

Hello,

I've recently bought a laptop
(Compaq Presario 2800) and installed Red Hat Linux 7.3 on it.  Everything went
just as planned except when it came to installing X.

The installer detected my video card
(ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW) fine and configured my pretty generic LCD monitor
(60 Hz refresh rate, if that matters).  I intend to use 16 or 24 bit color
with 1024x768 as my resolution (these do work as I have tried them under
Windows XP).

When it came time to test my
settings, I clicked OK.  What came up was a slightly scewed (did I spel
that right?) picture of my desktop.  I tried different settings
(different resolutions/color depth) but with the same results.  I kept
going with the installation, thinking it might work upon completion, but on the
first boot-up, the graphics were still messed up.

Basically, it look like there is a
bunch of streaks down my screen.  They are virtical lines that mess up a
few pixels around them.  The screen is still pretty readable, but text is
difficult to make out sometimes.  I'm pretty sure it is a configuration
problem, because taking screen shots and viewing them in Windows reveals a
perfectly clear screen.  What can I do about this?  What settings
should I change? Where?

If I did not give enough
information, please email me back.  Thank you for a great product, and I
look forward to getting it resolved.

Thank you so much,

Andrew Lindeman

The only problem with the vesa drivers is that it doesn’t take advantage of the
3d power of the card.

Thus I cannot play my games such as tux

[Newbie]Hmm seem to have overwritten the nice login screen

2002-05-29 Thread Alek Kenton

Hello All,

Having recently upgraded my Mandrake 8.1 box with
KDE3, and removing KDE2 I have lost the nice logon
screen, with the choice of users and window managers,
all I get now is the simple text entry boxes for my
login and password. I also get an extra Xconsole
window come up, a log window of somekind, this I
remember years ago using XFree86, so I guess its
default behaviour, can I get rid of this extra window?

Could someone tell me what I need installing or which
config files to check to get the nice screen back up.

Cheers in advance,

Alek.

[Newbie]Problems with keyboard RAlt / AltGr key

2002-05-29 Thread Subotai

Greetings!

Im trying to run an XFree86 server under an embedded install of linux. I have
a keyboard with infrared and an incorporated mouse. I get everything to work
just fine, BUT: the damn RightAlt key does not work! Since I have to use it
to write emails, you may feel my trouble... Or is there any other keycombo
for the @?

In my X config file i have - in the keyboard section - set RightAlt to
"ModeShift", that normally should suffice. So probably my XkbModel is wrong?
I tried the usual pc101-105, but before trying out every darn model out there
- is there someone who has had similar problems?

And just to be sure: when i quit the X server, and re-startx, a changed
XF86Config file get read anew, right?

Thank you in advance,
Subotai

[Newbie]Uncontrollable Mouse

2002-05-29 Thread Cecil R. Buckmeier

I am new to this newbie board and Linux.
Don't even know if I am doing this correctly but I'll give it a try.  I
just installed RH 7.3 last night and apparently have the same problem that you
do. The mouse keeps wanting to go to the lower left hand corner of the
screen no matter what I do.  The system is unusable.  I went to
the KDE site and they said it sounded like an XFree problem.  Have you
found a solution to your problem anywhere?

[Newbie]Application for video mode changing ?

Is there any application for changing the video mode under X11? I am
thinking about a program that allow the user to choose a mode from a list
of modes and then switch to that mode. Something more elaborated than the
simple Control+Alt+KeyPasdMinus and Control+Alt+KeyPasdPlus key
combinations.

[Newbie]How do I startup X with a black background

important that nothing is even capable of 'flashing' the pilot. Is there an

Right now, I have the first client spawned set the background black, but it
still flashes up the grid pattern first.

[Newbie]Mapping XFree86 server to the X Window System...

2002-05-29 Thread Greg Neely

As I recall, an X application can be made with
or without MOTIF widget, Xlib, and Xt calls.

Xlib and Xt function calls are handled by the
XServer (XFree86) more or less "directly".

If I wanted to write an application that used MOTIF
calls, I would need XFree86, plus someones add-on
implementation of the MOTIF widget libraries/headers.

At least, that is my assumption without knowing anything
else about XFree86 when it is called an "X-Server".

Now, and to the question, if Darwin implements a
release of XFree86, where do I get a product that
can be configured on an XServe box (running Mac
XServer) to pass MOTIF "Xm" widget calls to the
server and have the server understand them.

In other words, who makes the MOTIF widget libraries/
headers for the apple XServer implementation? Can
I contact them on the INTERNET.

It seems to me this would be extremely useful in getting
old applications developed using Xm, Xt, and Xlib calls
running on the new XServe boxes.

Thanks.

[Newbie]Diamond Viper Pro Issues (Weitek P9000 chipset)

2002-05-29 Thread Adam Luchjenbroers

This is on behalf of a friend who is having trouble getting his Diamond Viper
Pro PCI card to run under Linux.

He's running a fresh install of Mandrake 8.1, it doesn't prompt him as to
which version of X to use (I expect it simply went to 3.3.6 since the Weitek
chipsets aren't supported in 4.1.0).

Even in the shell he is seeing retrace lines and X will not start (it tries,
and ctrl-alt-backspace must be used to get back to the shell).

He runs a Windows/Linux dual boot and it works fine under Windows. So either
it is a software issue or a hardware issue for which Windows finds a
work-around.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

[Newbie]suggesting new feature: proportial mouse movement between screens

2002-05-29 Thread Andreas Luik

Hello XFree86 team:

Since XFree86 now supports multiple screen, it may be worthwhile to
think about adding a new "proportional mode" to the way mouse warping
from one screen to another works. Suppose a two screen configuration,
one with 2048x2048 (left) and one with 1280x1024 (right). Suppose,
the mouse leaves screen 0 at 2048,512. Currently, it will appear on
screen 1 at 0,512, i.e. the y-position is retained ("absolute mode").
In proportional mode, the ratio of the y-position would be equal to
the ration of the screen sizes, i.e. 2:1. Therefore, the position on
the new screen would be 0,256.

I think this should be easy to implement, and if nobody is going to
volunteer, I may have a look at it (it's just adding an boolean option
to the configuration file, and a simple computation in the function
which computes the new pointer coordinates for the destination
screen).

Comments?

Re: [Newbie]LAPTOP INSPIRON 2600

2002-05-29 Thread Mike Newell

I had the exact same problem and posted to the list with no response. I
ended up doing a lot of research and it actually has been touched on in
the past.

The problem appears to be with the way Dell's BIOS works. It allocates
1MB of memory to each of the i810 graphics controllers (there are two
separate controllers - one for the laptop display and one for the monitor
port). Apparently there's memory to allow at least 8MB but there's no way
to tell the BIOS to do this and the various XFree86 drivers don't (the
Windoze drivers of course do). So

You're left with only 1MB of memory for the video buffer, which only
supports 640x480 resolution in high color. I think you can get 1024x768
in some low color mode but that's not useful. Until the i810 driver guys
figure out how to do this (or someone else hacks away until they do)
you're stuck. I've spent some time on it but haven't gotten far. Clearly
it's possible since Windoze does it, but...

BTW, notice I said there are two controllers in the Inspiron. You can run
them either in tandem or separately; under Windoze I run them as two
separate displays (click on the second display in the properties window
and check the "extend the destop to this device" box). This allows you to
"spread" your desktop over the display AND monitor, which turns out to be
a Really Good Thing (tm). X should be able to do it too.

Errors were encountered while processing:
 /sw/var/cache/apt/archives/system-xfree86_4.1-5_darwin-powerpc.deb
E: Sub-process /sw/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I have tried several things none of them work. Any ideas or suggestions
would be extremely helpful.

Re: [Newbie]Problem with Laptop and XFree86

2002-05-29 Thread Markus Stoff

If you don't made an entry for your "DefaultDepth" in the Screen-section of your
XF86Config file, the default depth of 8 (256 colors) is assumed by XFree86.

In this case you should set the default depth explicit to 24 - that's my configuration
and it works fine.

Not that I know of, but it would be easy to hack the insides of the server
to make this work. You're in luck with this particular choice; the X spec
says the default root background is a tile using black and white pixels,
so you really can just change the source and still be compliant with the
spec.

Have you tried adding

to your device section?
