Re: [Newbie]Is this all there is to XFree86?
Technically, isn't that twm fired up on startx? I believe it is, and then would be a window manager.. the Tab Window Manager:) I know it's semantics, but I couldn't help it:) Chuck
Re: [Newbie]Is this all there is to XFree86?
Hi, Oisin: Thanks. Yes, I do not have a Window Manager. I am running Slackware v8.0 but I did not install any x* during initial setup. I'll check for packages that match wm*.tgz, then kde*.tgz and gno*.tgz. Regards, Chuck "Oisin C. In the xterm try a "ps -ax | grep wm", "ps -ax | grep -i "gnome", "ps -ax | grep -i kde" and report what the results are. If there's nothing at all then you haven't got a WM running or a desktop manager. These are what provide all the nice decorations and backgrounds. You could then (initially from the xterm, but later from your distro-specific scripts) run something like WindowMaker, or go the whole hog and run a desktop like Gnome or KDE. Check to see how your distro prefers to do it by reading their release docs.
